The Hole (2009)

Director Joe Dante returns to his horror-ish, family-friendly roots with The Hole, a flick that seemed somewhat promising from the trailers. Unfortunately, although The Hole did successfully capture the feel of a fun semi-horror romp, this turned out to be your pretty standard genre yarn, with a mediocre and highly predictable premise. You'd never guess it was Joe Dante behind the camera, as it...

Altitude (2010)

Altitude is a film that I've been somewhat interested in given it's fairly creative concept and potential Lovecraftian vibe. Sadly all the movie had was a concept, because the final product would've been better off as a short or a segment in some sort of anthology. The flick has a pretty strong opener, following the point of view of a female pilot flying a family around in a small plane....

Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010)

A couple years after the unnecessary and disappointing sequel hit DVD shelves, we're given Lost Boys: The Thirst another installment nobody asked for. Despite the previous effort being nothing more than a rehash of its predecessor, this film actually feels more like a true sequel to the original. The Tribe was nothing more than a build up to this flick, which brings back the Frog Brothers...

Chain Letter (2010)

When a movie sits on a shelf for over two years, it’s safe to make the assumption that either A.) the filmmakers are holding out for a distribution deal that doesn’t violently violate their assholes, or B.) it’s the definition of reprehensible shit.  I was expecting to go with the latter, especially when you think over the fact that the only reason it probably got a...

The Loved Ones (2009)

The Loved Ones is a film that offers nothing new to the table (literally, as you'll see in the movie), but thanks to the creative direction newcomer Sean Byrne took with it, we're given a surprisingly refreshing look at the normally bland psychopathic family sub-genre. The story is pretty simple -- we follow Brent a troubled young high school student who's still stressing over causing the...

Monsters (2010)

Described as "this year's District 9," Monsters is definitely love-hate-type film, especially when you go in expecting to see what the title would imply -- Monsters, because you will be sorely disappointed. The flick is, in fact, more of a human drama with a side of romance and a dash of sci-fi and thriller elements for good measure. I personally liked the movie, but I knew...

Hatchet II (2010)

The first Hatchet was a fun, trashy throwback to the slasher days of old done right.  It was by no means anything ground breaking, with more horror cameos and buckets of blood than actual plot, but as far as entertainment value went, it was top notch.  Like every film, it has its cynics.  If you’re one of them then avoid Hatchet II, as there is nothing new here that will...
