V/H/S (2012)

With all the found footage/POV-type films to come out lately, it was only a matter of time before an anthology was introduced. Thus, we have V/H/S a new low-budget collection of found footage horror tales that looked promising from the trailer, but unfortunately ended up being more of a disappointment than anything. One of the biggest issues I had being its gimmicky use of the VHS format, which...

Evil Toons (1992)

Evil Toons is a film that I remember passing up countless times in the video store growing up and now for whatever reason I decide to finally visit it as an adult, despite knowing better, especially with low-budget sleaze director Fred Olen Ray's name attached to it. I guess that could be blamed on my random mood for horror cheese at the time, plus the misleading trailer made it seem like a...

Juan of the Dead (2011)

With a lot of today's stale and unoriginal zombie movies, it's a nice change of pace to see something fun and creative come out of a country that isn't exactly known for their quality films, especially ones from the genre (I believe this may even be its first). Set in Cuba, the pic follows Juan - a man who hustles his way through life and finds that the recent zombie outbreak could mean big...

[Rec] 3: Genesis (2012)

After teaming with Jaume Balagueró with the first two [Rec] films, Paco Plaza and Juame decide to part ways for the final two installments in the franchise (supposedly), the first being this flick, followed by Apocalypse from Juame at a later date. It was initially thought that this would be a prequel to the previous installments, but it's actually a parallel story to the first two (...

Detention (2011)

Music video helmer-turned-feature film director Joseph Kahn returns (after the abysmal Torque in 2004) to bring us an incredibly whacked out new teen slasher flick titled Detention that's a mix of so many different genres and ideas, it's hard to really pinpoint where the man was going with it all. This proves to be the film's strength and weakness, as it's clear by the end of the film that much...

Psycho Cop (1989)

In hopes of capturing the success of the 1988 William Lustig action/horror pic, Maniac Cop, comes Psycho Cop a year later, a film that embodies everything that was wrong (and right!) with horror from the 80's. The story follows a group of young friends that head to a secluded getaway home for a little vacation time, but find themselves being stalked by a mysterious and seemingly overzealous...

UHM now officially 13 years old!!

So, today marks UHM's 13th anniversary. Yes, the site is hella old, and it's crazy to think that it's been around almost half my lifetime. I've been doing this thing for a VERY long time now. I was still in High School when I started; a time where genre sites like this were very few. I never guessed that UHM would be around for as long as it has, let-alone envisioned ever making a living...

Prometheus (2012)

Ridley Scott returns to the sci-fi genre and Alien saga after a 30-year hiatus with Prometheus, a film that started out as an official prequel to the first flick, but eventually branched out and into a spinoff of sorts (still set in the past though), which would still contain a few minor connections to the series. Having seen the movie it's pretty clear that it is still a prequel, but I guess...

Piranha 3DD (2012)

When the first Piranha 3D came out it was meant to be fun, gory, gratuitous and obscene and it worked in all aspects. This was likely thanks to director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes), who knows how to pile on the gore (when needed) and not go over the top to the point of being too inane and tedious, but most importantly it was all done in good fun. Then comes Piranha 3DD,...

Chernobyl Diaries (2012)

I didn’t go in expecting much from Chernobyl Diaries. All the advertising beat the audience over the head with the fact that the creator of the Paranormal Activity series produced it. That’s more of a deterrent for me than seal of approval at this point, considering the plummeting decline in the Paranormal sequels. Alas, I was really drawn in by the premise of using the Chernobyl...
