Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

PROJECT DETAILS:

Actor Willem Dafoe recently spoke briefly about his role in the film, saying: "I haven’t seen any footage yet, but it was fun to do. I play a police officer in the afterlife, so I’m a dead person. And in life I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident and that’s what sent me to the other side. But because of my skills, I became a detective character in the afterlife. So that’s my job. But it’s colored by the fact of who I was [when I was alive]: a B movie action star." (11/27/23)

Now that the actor's strike is resolved production on the film is set to resume soon. It reportedly only has a couple shoot days remaining before it's done and ready to move into post-production. (11/9/23)

According to a recent interview with Tim Burton, filming for the movie was only days away from completing when production had to be put on hold due to the writers/actor's strike. He was quoted saying: "I feel grateful we got what we got. Literally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 per cent done." Burton hopes to finish once the strikes are resolved. (9/11/23)

Filmed in London.

Willem Dafoe is said to be playing a "law enforcement officer in the afterlife."

Monica Bellucci is said to be playing Beetlejuice's wife.

Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are all returning.

Scripted by Mike Vukadinovich (Rememory, Runaways, Kidding).

Composer Danny Elfman spoke briefly about his return to the world of Beetlejuice, saying: "I’ll be doing that in a couple of months, as you may know, on another Tim Burton project. That is very exciting, to return to that world." He goes on to comment on Keaton's return to the project, saying: "Really, after all these years? Michael Keaton? I said, ‘He’s not even going to look that much different. That’s the beauty of the Beetlejuice makeup. He already looked like he was 150 in the first one.' It’s perfect, you know? Everybody else has to play the next generation, except for Michael. I mean, he’s still like really fit and really active and really on it. And with the Beetlejuice makeup, I can’t even imagine it’s going to look like he’s changed practically at all. So, I can’t wait for that." (5/3/23)

Scripted by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (duo behind hit shows such as Smallville, Into the Badlands and Wednesday.)

Jenna Ortega (Scream, X, Wednesday, Scream VI) is rumored to be circling a role in the film. If proven true, she would play the daughter of Lydia (Winona Ryder in the original). Tim Burton is said to be directing, with Michael Keaton expected to return, as well as Winona Ryder, but nothing official has been revealed just yet. Filming is aimed to begin sometime late May or early June in London, but the "budget has not been set, resulting in a back and forth." (3/10/23)

It has been confirmed that this film is back in development with Brad Pitt's Plan B production company. It's said that it's in very early development as the script has "yet to be written." Nothing else has been revealed at this time, but the previous update indicates that Keaton and Ryder will be back, which seems likely, but still has yet to be confirmed. (3/1/22)

A new rumor is floating around indicating that Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B has come aboard to produce, with filming possibly happening this Summer. Original stars, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are said to be reprising their roles. Keep in mind that this is a rumor since nothing official has been released. (2/28/22)

It looks like this project is no longer in development after it was revealed in a recent interview with Tim Burton, that nothing was happening with the project and he doesn't know if it'll move forward. Warner Bros. also confirmed that the movie is no longer in active development. Larry Wilson (one of the original "Beetlejuice" screenwriters), had this to say about the whole situation: "The bottom line is, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are not going to think about a 'Beetlejuice' sequel unless it somehow catches the energy of the first film. And that’s not easy. Beetlejuice' really was lightning in a bottle." (4/8/19)

The studio has hired Mike Vukadinovich (Rememory) to rewrite the latest draft. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are also reportedly still interested in returning for the project. (10/12/17)

Michael Keaton had a recent interview where he spoke a bit about the possibility of a sequel, saying: "You always hear things, that this is happening, and people seem to know more about it than I do. It’s possible that ship has sailed. The only way to do it is to do it right. So much of it was improvised and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can’t get close to that, you leave it alone." (8/01/16)

It was reported that Tim Burton revealed that the project was moving forward saying: "The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming." However, Tim Burton's rep cleared the rumor saying: "Tim Burton did not confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development. Tim’s focus is entirely on Miss Preegrine’s Home For Peculiar Children set for a September 30 2016 release and developing Dumbo." So it seems that at the moment the project isn't "officially" in development. (3/11/16)

Winona Ryder recently confirmed in an interview that she will return as "Lydia Deetz," saying "I think I can confirm it because Tim Burton did this interview. It was very hush-hush, top secret, ‘I don’t know what may happen, I don’t know,’ and then he was doing some press for ‘Big Eyes’ and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah, we’re doing it and Winona’s gonna be in it.’ So can I say…? I mean if he said it. But I really don’t know much more than anybody else." (8/10/15)

Winona Ryder had a recent interview where she implied she may be in the film, but is "sworn to secrecy." She went on to say: "It’s not a remake. It’s 27 years later. And I have to say, I love Lydia [Deetz, Ryder's teenage goth character] so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later." (11/21/13)

In a recent interview Tim Burton revealed that hes already spoken with Michael Keaton about the project and Keaton was reportedly very excited and would love to reprise his role in the film. (2/11/12)

Tim Burton was asked recently whether he would return to direct the sequel, where he revealed that he would, saying: "I love that character, and Michael [Keaton] is so great in it. I always think about how great and fun that character was, so I just said to ["Vampire Hunter" writer] Seth [Grahame-Smith], "If you have some idea about it, go for it, and then I'll look at it freshly." In the past, I tried some things, but that was way back when. He seemed really excited about it." Currently Seth Grahame-Smith has yet to run any ideas by Burton. (1/12/12)

The writer/producers intend this to be a true sequel set 26 years later, and have expressed that Michael Keaton must reprise his role as Beetlejuice, otherwise they will not move forward.

A sequel has been talked about for decades, with first rumblings in the early 90's when original director Tim Burton hired Jonathan Gems (Mars Attacks!) to script the sequel. Titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, the story saw "the Deetz family moving to Hawaii, where Charles is developing a resort. They soon discover that his company is building on the burial ground of an ancient Hawaiian Kahuna. The spirit comes back from the afterlife to cause trouble, and Betelgeuse becomes a hero by winning a surf contest with magic." Apparently, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder were interested in reprising their roles, but only if Tim Burton returned as director. Eventually Tim became too involved with Batman Returns and things fell through. However, as the years went on his interest in the project never faded, and the script went through several rewrites from various other people, but by the late 90's Tim and the studio had pretty much given up on it moving forward.

This is a rumored sequel to 1988's Beetlejuice, which was directed by Tim Burton and starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton.
