PROJECT DETAILS:

David Bruckner (The Ritual, Hellraiser remake) is set to write and direct this remake, replacing Simon West (Con Air, The Mechanic, The Expendables 2), who was previously attached. Sam Jackson was also originally going to star in the film, but that seems unlikely now that we have a new director. (1/9/24)

When Simon West was directing, the synopsis was as follows: "When a band of miners uncover something hidden deep beneath the earth they unwittingly unleash a hideous creature beyond imagination. Now the townsfolk must fightback, before it destroys everything."

It was recently revealed that one of the reasons the project hasn't moved forward is because the producers are apparently having trouble keeping the remake rights, so the current producers are suing to retain the rights: "The suit focuses on rights to remake The Blob, the cult B-film from 1958. Producers Richard Saperstein (Cell, Frequency, The Mist) and Brian Witten (Wedding Singer, American History X) say they’ve spent more than $418,000 developing their project since acquiring an option to the sci-fi classic back in 2009. After 12 years, they still need more time, but they’re having a hard time getting it from Worldwide Entertainment Corporation, run by Judith Harris, whose late husband ran the indie studio responsible for the original."  Adding..."In Los Angeles Superior Court, Saperstein and Witten are now suing to retain rights. They claim that Harris orally agreed to an extension and then failed to put it in writing despite multiple emails and even a $50,000 offer." At the moment it's unclear if Simon West is still attached as director or if Sam Jackson is still attached to star. (5/28/21)

It looks like the news about the film moving into pre-production already was simply a rumor, as director Simon West revealed in an interview he conducted a month ago that he's still not sure what he's doing next, saying: "I am not sure what I am doing next but I would eventually like to make The Blob. I am usually working on 3 or 4 things at once in the development stage but I never know which one will bubble to the top first." Even if he does move forward with this remake it seems like it might be more sci-fi than horror, as he revealed in an even older interview that sci-fi is his favorite genre: "I am always developing several projects at once. The Blob is one of the things I would like to make and part of my reinvention is to make it more sci-fi than horror. Actually, sci-fi is my favourite genre even though I’ve never made a sci-fi film." (10/25/17)

While nothing has been confirmed, it appears that the project may have moved to an early pre-production stage and there's a rumor that Halle Berry may have a starring role in the film. Sam Jackson still seems to be attached, but at the moment none of this has officially been confirmed, so everything must be treated as a rumor for the time being. (6/12/17)

Apparently this project has stalled a bit due to lack of funding, but according to Samuel L. Jackson things may be moving forward again sometime soon. Here's what he said in a recent interview: "I just got a call the other day (where the producers) said they finally got their money from China to do Blob." (3/31/17)

Filming was originally aimed to begin sometime in the Fall of 2015, but it never occured.

Samuel L. Jackson plays "a biochemistry professor attempting to thwart the other-worldly predator discovered deep within the earth."

Director Simon West was quoted saying: "With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans."

One of the producers was quoted saying: "Simon West has a unique gift for blending cutting edge effects, awesome visual spectacle and a hint of humor. He’s the perfect choice to reimagine The Blob and we’re so excited to be partnering with him."

Simon West (Con Air, The Mechanic, The Expendables 2) is attached to direct.

Original producer Jack H. Harris returns.

When Rob was still involved he was quoted saying: "My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing, that’s the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now. I have a totally different take, one that’s pretty dark."

Rob Zombie was originally going to write, produce, and direct this project, but he dropped out after he felt he needed a break away from any "pre-existing material".

This is the second remake of the 1958 original, the first was 1988's The Blob, which starred a young Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith.

A remake of the original 1958 film with the same name.
