PROJECT DETAILS
- You can treat this as a rumor for now, but word is that the studio rejected Whit Anderson's script and they're currently seeking a new writer. However, things may actually be winding down in the studio as fan outcry of Whedon's lack of involvement in the project has made some of the producers question their motives. One person close to the project was quoted saying: "If you’re going to bring it back, you have to do it right. [Anderson] came in with some great ideas and she had reinvented some of the lore and it was pretty cool but in the end there just wasn’t enough on the page." (12/22/11)
- The producers are aiming for a 2011/2012 theatrical release.
- Producer Charles Roven had this to say about Whit Anderson's script: "Whit’s take is pretty compelling and a lot of fun, and it’s interesting to see all of this reimagined. This is a completely new reboot. Tone is extremely important, and you want the audience to realize what is at stake and the peril is real, but at the same time what’s going on should be fun and inviting and keep everyone engaged. It needs to be relevant to today too, and that is what Whit has found a way to do." adding... "While this is not your high-school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough and sexy as we all remember her to be"
- Apparently, despite previous reports of "restarting the storyline" rumors indicate that Sarah Michelle Gellar was going to return to the project, but Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) would be a fresh new character that would star along-side Sarah. Vanessa, however, turned down the role.
- The producers are aiming to restart the Buffy storyline while not "trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon."
- Creator Joss Whedon will not be involved.
- Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with Fran Rubel Kuzui (original director) and her husband, Kaz Kuzui (producer) on this project.
- The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.
- The film will have no connection to the hit television series, nor will it feature any of the popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike
- A "reboot" of the original 1992 horror-comedy.

I would actually love to see a Buffy remake but ONLY if Joss Whedon was allowed to do the original script, the way he intended it to be done in the first place! I'm not a big fan of the movie, but still love the T.V. show and only Whedon could do it right.
No. Just, no. I'd probably be one of the biggest BTVS fans out. I do not not like this idea one bit. Joss Whedon and the original cast in the television series made the show what it was, they were such amazing actors. Sarah Michelle Gellar IS Buffy. There is no other.
Considering that Buffy was like my favorite show, I am not excited about this movie at all. I just can't see this being good and I am very happy that it is shelved. I hope it stays on that shelf until it is dusty and moldy and no one wants to use it anymore. (metaphorically speaking)
They'll eventually get this made, especially if Fright Night does well. They're remaking everything these days. If the Crow gets made, this will get made.
They made season 8 a comic book series just not a film/movie look it up.
YES!!!!!!! Loved the original Buffy Movie and T.V series. I say re film it just like the first movie but more modern. Dont F it up. lol
i agree i think they should just follow the series cause the way it ended it left to many unanswered questions i mean what happend after sunnydale collapsed where the buffy an the scoobies go an is the first still alive an active an who cares if vanessa hudgens didnt wanna be in it buffy is still better than twilight any day
i kinda wanna see this film follow on after the series see all the old faces rather than another remake
Loved the movie growing up. I had such a crush on Kristy Swanson.
This movie could be really good if they make it far away from comedy version of the movie back in the 90's add more gore to this remake if it happends. I would totally get sexy ass Jessica Alba play Buffy or Angelina Jolie or even Jessica Biel would fit good has role playing Buffy unless they looking for someone young play role I go totally with Mila Kunis girl plays in the 70's Show and Forgetting Sarah Marshall she be good fit for this flim remake
if you're gonna do it, continue the Whedon-verse storyline
I agree with alot of you, bring back Whedon and Gellar and make this the awesome movie it deserves to be.
what a ridiculous idea! If Joss is not involved, it is not a Buffy movie. I watched the original, which he actually left the set of because he didn't agree with the changes being made to his script. That's why the original film is so hated by most people, the script was changed. There are very few Whedon-ish lines in it. I thought Kristy Swanson's Buffy was a.) an idiot and b.) incredibly stuck on herself for the vast majority of the movie.
Also, unless you're continuing the series with the characters, this does not need to be made. Everyone knows Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy and loves her, as well as her friends. If they remake this, you know they're going to cast some CW/Disney starlet to play Buffy and it will be hated far more than the original - which at least has cult status. I vote HELL NO!!
This could be good. I love watching people reinvent a story. It's always great seeing somebody elses view. I loved the show... ok, I was obsessed with the show lol Sarah Michelle Gellar.. not soo much. I think seeing her cast typed ruined her pizazz! I did not like the original movie, sorry whedon but the first glimpse of Buffy SUCKED! It was funny, but so was Bio Dome.. and we know that's not the greatest movie. Anyways, I'm really curious as to who will play Buffy in this remake. Because if the producers are aiming to reinvent the story while not trampling on the original buffyverse that Joss created (which was amazing), then I doubt Gellar will be back. So the question is, who will the new Buffy Summers be? All I know is, they better not screw this up lol
im really looking forward to this! Keep buffy alive. To the people who think the movie was better:The movie was a flop which is why the tv show almost didnt get made. But it did and it was 10 times better than the movie. And the new movie would be lucky to have sarah michelle gellar in it! Because although kristy swanson originally played her, sarah perfected the role. And if you dont agree, than you really dont know what good acting is! Plus the characters in the show were amazing! So lets see how the new movie turns out. cant wait
I really liked the movie to be honest. Kristy is a way better actress than Sarah in my opinion. I did like the show until she died and got brought back. That was pretty damn lame. How come no other slayers were ever brought back? Joss RUINED the series by doing that. Maybe it won't be too bad....We won't really know til it comes out. I wouldn't bet on greatness but I wouldn't bet on god awful either.
@trunks_52003
Buffy was brought back to life by her friends the other slayers had no friends .
That's why none of the other slayers were brought back .
The slayer was meant to be a loner living on the fringes of society . Her only duty to slay vampires with only her watcher as a companion .
Why the heck is Kuzui doing this? it's not a Buffy movie without Buffy, it's generic vampire movie and nothing more. No fan of the show is going to see this, it's not the film we wanted for 7 solid years of TV. A film involving the cast of the show we loved with the creative man we adore is what we wanted, not a cheap carbon copy that'so nly being made to try and get some cash out of the vampire high that we're going through right now. If Kuzui had only asked Joss before announcing anything this might have happened like we wanted... sadly now it looks like once again Kazui has screwed us over.
i am probably the opposite of all of you.... don't hate me, please.
i actually really loved the movie. and, i really didn't even care for the show.
the movie is like a cult classic.
Donald Sutherland. Rutger Hauer. David Arquette. Hilary Swank and Ben Affleck even had a small role. plus, in my opinion... Kristy Swanson is/was Buffy.
if they must re-make this, i just hope it is a bit darker. hope they don't fill it up with the new cast of 90210.
This does NOT need to happen.
The movie was entertaining and the show was actally better but when the execes state "to restart the Buffy storyline while not 'trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon.'" And Whedon will have nothing to do with it, then what is the fucking point?!?! There is a like a decade of history that Whedon has made and now these donkey fuckers want to restart it but not mess up what has been created already??? Danm! There isn't ANYTHING that Hollywood would not rehash to make a buck.
If Joss isnt involved then it isnt Buffy. I refuse to watch it unless Joss is involved.
BTVS is one of my all-time favorite shows and Joss Whedon is the man behind the curtain on that one. In a way, it was good BECAUSE it was dark, but not deliberately horrific....just dark enough to create a sense of danger. Nowadays, when Hollywood remakes shit, it comes out as a gory, bloody mess with too many jump scares and death scenes and not nearly enough plot. To remake BtVS...even as a horror-comedy....without Joss Whedon involved? Thats like a cardinal sin. I hate Hollywood right now.
I thought the original buffy the vampire movie was great. Why remake it?
i loved the old version not sure why hollywood keeps remaking everything guess they have no new ideas .
gay
i loved this movie when i was a real little tyke. and sadly sadly sadly i liked the tv show. i dont know why, i hated all the charactors. i dont know what the hell is going on when film companys have resorted to not only remaking everything but are now remaking EVERYTHING!!! im a little disgusted but what the hell ill probably end up seeing it someday anyway.
I hate the fact that Joss Whedon isn't going to be involved. I loved the Buffy and Angel TV series and I'm bummed that their isn't another spin-off TV show of the buffyverse. That's what we need, another TV show! I wasn't a fan of the original movie. As a matter of fact I didn't even attempt to watch the show after seeing the movie. It wasn't until after both the Buffy and Angel series had already ended that I decided to give them a try. And... that wasn't until I watched Serenity and discovered there was a TV show that the movie came from that was prematurely canceled called Firefly. After watching Firefly I said to myself, "I've got to check out Joss Whedon's other work." That's when I discovered that he was the man behind Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I tried to go back and watch the movie after watching the series but couldn't make myself watch more than 20 minutes. It was a painful 20 minutes. I would love to see a new Buffy movie! Just don't mess it up! Remember, the fans loved the cast and characters from the TV show, not the movie!!! Twilight SUCKS by the way. I couldn't force myself to finish that one either.
I am with u end. I loved both shows and the act thaht joss isn't involved sucks.
