Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach's comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange...he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it's suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

PROJECT DETAILS
  • Jack Black had a recent interview where he was quoted saying: "I read the script, saw my friend Rob Letterman was directing it and I thought it was great. It’s funny and scary—something that would be great to take my kids to. And something that would be fun to make." Adding..."I play R.L. Stine, who’s not in any of the books, but he’s an essential character in this movie, which is all about when all of his characters come to life. It was kind of a great way to bring out all of the scary beasts and monsters from all of his books in one movie. I also got to meet R.L. and he’s a really great guy. Really smart and funny and sweet. But I made [the character] more of a sort of curmudgeonly dark, brooding beast master."
  • Filmed in and around Conyers, Madison, and Atlanta, Georgia, notably in the counties of Morgan, Rockdale, Cobb, and DeKalb.
  • Originally set for a March 23rd 2016 theatrical release.
  • Ken Marino will play "Coach Carr, the blowhard coach at Greendale High who wades into battle when monsters overrun the school."
  • Odeya Rush plays Jack Black’s "quirky and mysterious niece, who teams up with her young male neighbor to battle the monsters unleashed from Mr. Shivers’ works."
  • Rob Letterman (Monsters vs Aliens, Gulliver's Travels) directs.
  • Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Killer) is now rewriting the script.
  • Writer Carl Ellsworth also scripted Red Eye, Disturbia and The Last House on the Left remake.
  • Writing duo Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander (Problem Child, Ed Wood, 1408) worked on an early version of the script.
  • This project is said to be one the "fast track."
  • The producers are aiming to cast child actors with prominent older actors in supporting roles.
  • The studio hopes this film will be the start of a new series of films.
  • Sony's Columbia Pictures is behind this.
  • Scholastic Media's Deborah Forte and Neal Moritz (I Am Legend, Prom Night '08) are producing.
  • The novels spawned a Fox Kids television series that ran for four seasons.
  • Based on the children's novel series that ran from 1992 to 1997.
