PROJECT DETAILS:

It appears that this project has been dead for quite a while. In fact, back in October of 2015 the studio reportedly scrapped the idea for a sequel in favor of a potential television series. Nothing ever came of that and nothing else has been reported since. (1/30/23)

French director Bruno Aveillan is rumored to be taking over directing duties, while the studio searches for a new writer to work Tommy Wirkola's script. It's said that the studio is looking to "pump a little more excitement into the franchise". (8/7/15)

Apparently the story will involve voodoo.

It looks like Tommy Wirkola will not be returning to direct, as he recently stated in an interview that he wants to do something other than another sequel, saying: "I have been lately attached to a few more things, it’s just a matter of time and priorities. I did DEAD SNOW 1, then HANSEL & GRETEL 1, and then DEAD SNOW 2. I want to do something a little bit different now and not just do sequels. I did write the script and I hope to be involved in it. But yeah, I won’t be directing it." (10/4/14)

Writer/director Tommy Wirkola offered an update on the project recently, revealing that the script is done and now it's up to the studio to move forward. Here's what he had to say: "I’ve written the script for it. I’ve given it to Paramount and it’s up to them now. But I don’t know what’s going to happen. Jeremy [Renner] is so busy these days, I don’t know how they’re going to juggle all of that, but it’s up to [Paramount]. We’ll see. Hopefully, I’ll get to do another film first. They really liked the script I gave them. The first film was a learning curve for me working in the studio system and the script I wrote for the original was so different. We ended up taking a lot out and altering stuff that first time. I’m smarter now. I tried taking what I learned and still delivered a sequel script that’s an R-rated action film." (9/22/14)

Paramount Pictures plans to have the film released by sometime in 2016.

Although it's not official at the moment, it's safe to assume Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will reprise their roles.

Though the film only made a little more than 50-million domestically, it went over the $150-mil mark overseas, which brought it an overall total of more than $200-mil, making it enough for the studio to greenlight a sequel.

This is a sequel to 2013's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
