PROJECT DETAILS
  • Filming in the U.K. and Bulgaria. (10/20/17)
  • Sophie Okonedo plays "Lady Hatton, a resident seer at the Osiris Club, an ancient English club dedicated to uncovering supernatural mysteries."
  • Alistair Petrie plays "Lord Adam Glaren, a high-ranking member at the club."
  • Brian Gleeson plays "Merlin, a wizard."
  • Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Hawaii Five-0) is in talks to replace Ed Skrein as "Major Ben Daimio."
  • Penelope Mitchell joins the cast as the "elder witch Ganeida."
  • Ed Skrein was originally cast as "Major Ben Daimio, a rugged military member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense who, due to a supernatural encounter, can turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain." But apparently left the project after fans began to complain about "Hollywood whitewashing" since the original character is Asian. (8/28/17)
  • Sasha Lane (American Honey) is in final negotiations to join the cast as "Alice Monaghan, who in the comics, Hellboy rescues from fairies that kidnapped her. She retains some supernatural gifts because of her time with the fairies."
  • Previously titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.
  • Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil franchise) is in talks to join the cast as the Blood Queen.
  • When a fan asked Ron Perlman if he'd have a cameo in the film he replied with the following: "When Hellboy freezes over."
  • Actor Ian McShane (Deadwood, American Gods) plays Hellboy’s adoptive father, "Professor Broom."
  • Director Neil Marshall had a recent interview where he revealed that they're definitely going for an R rating, saying: "We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off. It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. Nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main [difference]. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that." He then added how he's going to stick to practical effects, saying: "It’s definitely going to be as practical as we can possibly make it. I love to do stuff in camera whenever I possibly can, and use CG as the amazing tool that it is, to enhance or expand upon the world, but not to use it to replace reality, when you can do it [for] real." (6/27/17)
  • Actor David Harbour had a recent interview where he gave some details on the project, saying: "We’re supposed to go in September, I hope. It’s good. It’s a whole new thing. I’d always been a fan of the comics and there’s a darker tone to it and I think in the climate we have now there’s kind of a darker… a desire for more of that… the script is good and this guy Neil Marshall is directing who’s really good and the aesthetic is great." Adding... "It’s a character that I love, and sort of in the way, I think Mike [Mignola] and a bunch of other people saw me in ‘Stranger Things’ and wanted me to play Hellboy and I think he has some parallels to him. I think he’s another complicated anti-hero who is not strictly good or bad, he’s just trying to do the right thing. I think he’s a demon, he’s crazy, and he’s also sweet and vulnerable and neurotic […] so there’s a lot of complexity there. So often, the superhero movies can be really fun and I want this to be really fun, but I also want it to be more of a character piece and more about this dude’s struggle. I think it could be interesting. I don’t know, I just hope we make a good movie. We’ll see. You be the judge!" (6/9/17)
  • Co-writer Andrew Cosby spoke about the darker tone of this reboot, saying: "I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics." (5/10/17)
  • Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is in talks to direct.
  • David Harbour (Stranger Things) is in talks to play Hellboy.
  • It's said that the filmmakers are aiming for an R-rating.
  • Ron Perlman will not return as Hellboy.
  • Guillermo del Toro will not return to write/direct, as he wanted a much bigger budget that the studio couldn't agree on. The studio then decided a reboot would be the best approach for the next installment.
  • Based on the Mike Mignola comic book.
  • This is not the much anticipated sequel, instead it's described as a "reboot" that will relaunch the property.
