It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters who were executed for practicing witchcraft, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to figure out how to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before midnight on All Hallow’s Eve.

Actress Thora Birch will not return as "Dani Dennison" due to scheduling conflicts. Had she been able to reprise her role it's said that her character wo uld have helped aid the new young cast in dealing with the witches.
The original cast of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are all back to reprise their roles.
Doug Jones returns as "Billy Butcherson."
Adam Shankman (Bringing Down the House, The Pacifier, Hairspray, What Men Want) is set to direct the movie, which will eventually premiere on Disney+. Meanwhile, the original cast (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najim) has still yet to sign on to reprise their roles, but the studio is still hoping to bring them back in some capacity. Bette Midler had a recent interview where she talks about possibly returning for the sequel, saying: "Oh, I hope they get to me before I'm a corpse. I hope Disney+ is a big success and I hope we get to do it, because [Winifred] is, of course, one of my favorite characters. I mean she's, in the zeitgeist. I have met people -- I've met grownup people, like 40-year-olds, 50-year-olds -- who say, 'Oh I remember that! Hocus Pocus! I was brought up on that.' It's so mortifying 'cause I still look 35. [Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker] actually talk about it whenever we see each other. We laugh, we say, 'Oh, wouldn't it be great if?' Because all of us had pretty much the same experience on it. I can't wait to read the script. We're gonna see what happens." (11/4/19)
After talk of this being a remake, it seems that the studio has changed their minds and decided to move forward with a sequel again. This time they're aiming to make it available on Disney's upcoming streaming service. Jen D’Angelo (writer/producer of Workaholics) is currently set to script. At the moment there's no word if any of the original cast will return, but the studio is apparently keen on having Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najim back in some capacity. Despite opening to mixed-to-negative reviews when it initially came out, the original film has amassed a cult following over the years, mostly due to repeated broadcast showings on television and is now considered to be a cult classic by many.
Rumors of a sequel had been swirling around for years, but it wasn't until news of a remake in 2017 that things began to actually move.
This project initially started out as a made-for-TV remake of the original 1993 movie, but much backlash from fans forced the studio to rethink the project. It's now said to be a sequel to the original movie that will be developed for Disney's new streaming service.
