PROJECT DETAILS:

Will Smith had a convo at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, where he revealed that the script is ready and Michael B. Jordan is still involved with the project. Here's what he had to say: "I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. The script just came in… I’m probably giving away too much information…" Despite Smith's death in the first movie, the film offered an alternate ending as an extra on the DVD where Smith lived and apparently this sequel will follow the events of that ending, saying: "We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived. I can’t tell you any more but Michael B. Jordan is in and we’re doing it." (12/4/23)

With the writer's strike going on nothing's currently happening with the project, but writer Akiva Goldsman did offer a really brief update saying that work had already begun on the script, saying: "I’m writing when I’m allowed to write again. And I had already begun ‘[I Am] Legend 2’ when we [started striking]." (7/10/23)

Writer Akiva Goldsman offered an update on the project recently, where he talks a bit about the story and what we can expect from the sequel, saying: "This will start a few decades later than the first. I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the empire state building, but the possibilities are endless. We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film. What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text." (2/15/23)

It looks like the studio has dropped the idea of rebooting the movie and has gone back to developing a sequel, as the project is officially back in development, with news that Will Smith returns and will be joined by Michael B. Jordan. Not much else is revealed, as this project is still in early development with a script currently being written by Akiva Goldsman, who fans may remember also scripted the previous movie. (3/4/22)

Apparently the studio has given up on trying to bring back Will Smith and are now pushing for a reboot of the potential franchise. Writer Gary Graham is retrofitting his script for A Garden At The End Of The World (described as a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers) to fit into a reboot for I Am Legend. The two properties reportedly contain enough similarities to blend together. (10/2/14)

Producer Akiva Goldsman recently confirmed in an interview that they've pretty much given up on pursuing a sequel, saying: "Oh no no, [there was] never a movie. I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first... really right when the population of of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo. Then we did a sequel that started with Neville again — and you realized that he was cloned. We’ve tried every which way. It will never happen but we really enjoyed trying to make it happen."

Despite the outcome of the previous film, the studio is looking to bring back Will Smith as "Robert Neville."

Back when the project was still thought to be a prequel, Will Smith revealed some potential plot details: "...it’s essentially the fall of the last city – the last stand of Manhattan. The movie would be…within the body of the movie D.C. and then Manhattan would fall as the last city. It’s a really cool idea trying to figure it out…there’s a reason why we have to take a small band and we have to get into D.C. So we have to make our way from New York to D.C. and then back to New York."

D.B. Weiss scripted an early draft (back when it was a prequel) that was based on a detailed outline that was discussed by Will Smith, Francis Lawrence and producers Akiva Goldsman and James Lassiter.

When the project was still a prequel it was said that original director Francis Lawrence would return.

When the project was original announced in 2008 it was said to be a prequel, but now it looks like the studio is pursuing a sequel.
