This project apparently died towards the end 2016, after author Anne Rice regained the rights to the novels and intended to pursue a television series instead of a movie. A series was developed and ultimately released October 2nd 2022 and currently airs on the AMC network. (10/14/22)
This project is still in development, but if the recent script is approved (which was turned into the studio in April) things will begin to move forward. (5/6/16)
Josh Boone has expressed interest in possibly having Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Suicide Squad) play the new Lestat, though nothing has been confirmed. (5/6/16)

A film adaptation of the fourth book titled The Tale of the Body Thief has also been in development for years, but there hasn't been much movement on that project.
This wouldn't be the first time that elements from The Vampire Lestat were used, as 2002's Queen of the Damned movie used elements from that and the Queen of the Damned novel (third part in the series).
This is said to be a remake that combines elements from The Interview With the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat (second novel in The Vampire Chronicles series) by author Anne Rice.
