PROJECT DETAILS
  • Actor Tom Hiddleston had a recent interview where he revealed further story details, saying: "I don’t want to spoil too much… But it’s a whole new re-conception of the mythology. It essentially follows a group of disparate travelers and explorers and soldiers who travel to an undiscovered island in the South Pacific. And it’s set in a time period where you could conceive that there are still undiscovered places on the earth. What they find on the island is surprising, and then every character has a very different response to it. It’s going to be spectacular and epic, but also the human drama is kind of interesting as well." (4/5/16)
  • Filmed in Hawaii, followed by locations in Iceland and Vietnam.
  • John Goodman plays "Randa, a government official who leads an expedition."
  • Word is that Universal has moved the property over to Warner Bros. in hopes of doing a King Kong vs. Godzilla mashup after this and the Godzilla sequel are released. (9/10/15)
  • Actor Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) is said to be playing a pilot.
  • Derek Connolly (Safety Not Guaranteed, Jurassic World) has been brought on board for last minute rewrites.
  • Samuel L. Jackson is in early talks to join the project, replacing the character that was originally going to star J.K. Simmons.
  • J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton left the project due to "scheduling conflicts".
  • Originally had a November 4th 2016 release.
  • Written by John Gatins (Real Steel, Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla remake)
  • Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts also helmed The Kings of Summer.
  • Previously titled Skull Island.
  • It's said that the film's story "honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline."
  • Described as "a bold new take on the mythos of another iconic beast."
