PROJECT DETAILS:
According to a recent interview with Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky this film version is no longer in development and the film rights have reverted back to the author after the studio failed to move forward with the movie. Apparently the biggest issue with the project was getting a proper script, which proved troublesome since the studio wanted to set it in Washington D.C.. Here's what the author had to say: “A lot of things didn’t work out in Washington D.C.. In Washington D.C., Nazis don’t work, Communists don’t work at all, and the Dark Ones don’t work. Washington D.C. is a black city, basically. That’s not at all the allusion I want to have, it’s a metaphor of general xenophobia but it’s not a comment on African-Americans at all. So it didn’t work.” Adding... “They had to replace the Dark Ones with some kind of random beasts, and as long as the beasts don’t look human the entire story of xenophobia doesn’t work, which was very important to me as a convinced internationalist. They turned it into a very generic thing.” The author is reportedly speaking with a new set of producers about possibly doing a film, but for now this is no longer in development. (12/12/18)

It's said that the producers are aiming for this to turn into franchise material "in the vein of Mad Max and The Hunger Games."

This project was originally announced in 2012 with Gran Via Productions producing.

Based on the Russian novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, which was turned into a video game in 2010.
