Monster Hunter

Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Lt. Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower.

In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures. As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.

PROJECT DETAILS:

The film opened to Chinese theaters recently, but was ultimately pulled shortly after due to backlash from a line of dialogue said by a character in the movie. Apparently the line of dialogue was meant to be a simple joke that catered to Chinese audiences, but it backfired as many found it to be racist. The studio has since removed the line from all prints of the movie and the filmmakers have apologized for the misunderstanding. Meanwhile, the US release date has been moved forward a week and will now be releasing on December 18th. (12/8/20)

Paul W.S. Anderson had a recent interview where he offered an update on the project (which is apparently already finshed), saying: "The movie is 100 percent finished. We were supposed to be releasing it on Labor Day weekend but we pushed it into 2021, but it’s completely done. So it’s coming out April 23 of next year. For me, it’s my most favorite movie I’ve ever made. It has a rather unique look to it." Adding..."It’s wonderful escapism and when the world starts to right itself and people can go back to theaters, that’s exactly what people will want and need is to escape for a couple of hours into a different realm. And that’s what Monster Hunter has in spades, and that’s why I was so excited to turn it into a movie." (8/3/20)

Originally had a September 4th 2020 theatrical release before being pushed back due to the covid-19 pandemic. (7/13/20)

Filmed in and around Cape Town, South Africa.

Ron Perlman plays a man named "Admiral," the leader of the Hunter’s Crew.

T.I. is said to play a character named "Link," who is apparently a sniper.

Milla Jovovich plays a character named "Artemis."

On his approach towards the film, Paul W. S. Anderson was quoted saying: "There are no real central characters [in the game] so it’s a bit like when we first approached Resident Evil and imposed our own characters and story on that world. I think this is a perfect IP for us to do exactly that same thing again. The Monster Hunter world includes these huge deserts that make the Gobi Desert look like a sandbox, and they have ships that sail through the sand. These full-on galleons, but rather than sailing on the ocean waves, they sail through waves of sand…You’re fighting these giant creatures, some as big as a city block. They live underneath the Earth and when they burst out, it’s like the best of Dune. You also have these flying dragons, giant spiders, the most wonderful creatures."

On director Paul W. S. Anderson one of the producer's was quoted saying: “Paul has proven over and over he does stylish movies. It’s one of his big strong points. He can make a movie look good, is very much into visuals."

The studio is aiming for this to be their next big franchise, similar to what they did with the Resident Evil movies.

The effects for the film will once again be handled by Toronto’s Technicolor-owned Mr. X, who also worked on the Resident Evil franchise.

Apparently the studio is teaming up with a "big company" in Japan and China to develop this.

Budgeted at an estimated $60-million.

This movie reteams writer/director Paul W. S. Anderson, studio Constantin Film, and Milla Jovovich.

Based on the hit Capcom game with the same name.
