PROJECT DETAILS:

This project was announced in 2016 and then never really moved much since. Fede Alvarez has also moved on to various other projects, leaving this one likely in development hell. (2/3/23)

Directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead 2013) and co-written by Alvarez and writing partner Rodo Sayagues.

There was a bidding war for this project between several big studios, including DreamWorks and Sony before Warner Bros. eventually won with a seven-figure number.

It's said that this is substantially different from the previous iteration, as well as Pacific Rim, although the core concept — humans versus monsters — remains the same.

Apparently an adaptation was previously attempted around 2010 with Tim Burton as director and John August as screenwriter, but it fell through when the similarly themed Pacific Rim was released in 2013 from Guillermo del Toro.

This is based on the board game Monsterpocalypse from Privateer Press.
