PROJECT DETAILS:

Originally had an April 3rd 2020 theatrical release before getting pulled from the schedule due to the current situation with the coronavirus. While there's no set date, the studio still plans to release it sometime this year. (3/13/20)

Originally had an April 13th 2018 then a February 22nd, a August 2nd 2019 then an April 3rd 2020 theatrical release.

Apparently the last report about reshoots never actually occured and the studio may have finally reached some kind of agreement with director Josh Boone, who has been promoting the movie on social media recently, where he indicated that this would be his original version with no major edits or changes. (1/2/20)

One of the film's producers recently confirmed that the movie will be undergoing reshoots this year, which is why the release date was pushed once again. Here's what he had to say: "What’s happening is we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney. That’s really it. Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together. We're always scrambling to get these actors back together so they’re all in the same place at the same time. So that will be some time this year; we’ll do our pick-ups and the movie will come out." (6/5/19)

While the film supposedly still has an August release, the way it will be released remains to be seen, especially with the recent Fox-Disney merger. The movie was supposed to undergo reshoots, which reportedly never happened and now rumors are swirling around that the film will simply be dumped on Disney's new streaming service in it's current form. (3/18/19)

In a recent interview actress Anya Taylor-Joy confirmed that the film's delayed release is due to reshoots, rewrites, and apparently a new character being added. Here's what she had to say: "I do think that there is a great responsibility to make sure the movie is done right and that we deliver the fans something that they can all feel happy about and excited about. So, I don’t think it being delayed is a bad thing because it’s definitely more important to make sure that we get it right than rushing to make a date. So, hopefully, all of these reshoots and adding of the new character that will give the fans an altogether satisfactory, wonderful product." (3/12/18)

According to director Josh Boone they're aiming for a PG-13 rating, saying: "This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal." He also adds that the mutants in the film won't be wearing costumes: "There are no costumes. That alone makes it different. They can’t be with the other kids at the X-Mansion. They’re too f—ed up. They’ve all killed people, whether intentionally or unintentionally." (1/24/18)

Apparently the movie's release has been pushed back 10 months so the filmmakers can reshoot several new scenes to make the movie "scarier." Word is that a recent test screening "went well, but not great" so the producers are looking to focus even more on the horror aspect in hopes of capitalizing on recent successful R-rated horrors like Get Out and It. (1/14/18)
