Pacific Rim: Uprising

John Boyega's plays the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) — who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious‘ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

PROJECT DETAILS
  • Originally had a February 23rd 2018 release.
  • Filmed in Australia and China.
  • Previously titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.
  • Levi Meaden plays "Ilya, an irreverent and offbeat cadet."
  • Apparently Charlie Hunnam will not return as "Raleigh Becket" in this sequel since the filming schedule conflicts with his other obligations.
  • John Boyega is said to play the lead character, who is reportedly the son of Idris Elba's character from the original.
  • Derek Connolly (Jurassic World co-writer) is the latest writer attached to work on the script. (5/12/16)
  • The studio has set Steven S. DeKnight to direct, which marks his debut. He most recently served as executive producer and head writer of Marvel’s Daredevil for Netflix and he also created Spartacus for Starz. Guillermo del Toro will remain as producer. (2/24/16)
  • Writer Jon Spaihts also worked on Prometheus and The Darkest Hour.
  • The studio has removed the film's August 2017 date from the release schedule, but claims to still be committed to making the sequel. Apparently they want to use the extra time to ensure the film is "the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves." (9/30/15)
  • Guillermo Del Toro had a recent interview where he still seemed optomistic about the project, saying: "We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it." He also adds that he will probably work on another project before moving forward with Pacific Rim 2 and that the release date will likely be pushed back. (9/18/15)
  • Originally had an April 7th then a August 4, 2017 release.
  • Filming was originally aimed to begin sometime in November 2015.
  • Guillermo del Toro offered more details on what to expect from the sequel in a recent interview. Here's what he had to say: “It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after — what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump." He adds.. "the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure." (12/2/14)
  • Guillermo del Toro gave a brief update on the project saying: "We got the first draft of the movie now, and we are going to spend another 4-5 months on the screenplay before we start pre-production. We start pre-production next year in August-September and start shooting November-December next year."  He then adds what fans can expect, saying: "The direction we’re going in is very different from the first. All I can say is some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’’so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one. I hope people like it but you’re gonna get a very different experience from the first one." (10/20/14)
  • Guillermo del Toro was quoted saying: "The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast."
  • It's said there will be an animated series and a continuation of the Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero prequel graphic novel.
  • Will be in 3D and go to IMAX.
  • Guillermo del Toro had a recent interview, saying the following about the script he's working on with Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk): "We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle."
  • Guillermo del Toro returns to write, but will not direct.
  • It's said that the characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) were originally planned to return, however nothing official has been confirmed.
  • This is the obvious sequel to the 2013 film Pacific Rim. It was rumored that this would be a prequel, but del Toro has confirmed that it would be a sequel taking places after the events of the first.
