The First Purge

Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.

To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.

PROJECT DETAILS:

Previously said to be titled The Purge: The Island.

Writer James DeMonaco gave additional details in a recent interview where he reveals that it's set on Staten Island and will focus on the very first experimental Purge, saying: "I was wondering how you get people to stay for the first Purge, and what they do is they start monetizing it. People from Staten Island can easily go to Brooklyn for the evening, so what they do is start promising very decent sums of money for the very poor people in the neighborhood. It becomes a monetization of murder and violence, incentivizing killing and keeping people around for them to be victims. So you see the inception of how grotesque the idea of the Purge is, and the manipulation upon the society." He goes on to say that the film will be the most "crowd-pleasing" of the Purge movies and will focus on an anti-hero, saying: "It’s so kick ass in its third act. What’s fun too is there’s an anti-hero. More than the previous films, there’s a singular hero in this movie. This is one man’s journey, William, an anti-hero [who] was inspired by Eastwood in Unforgiven, so it’s this very cool, modern kind of badass who redeems himself through the story." (9/7/17)

Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands) is set to direct.

Series creator James DeMonaco had a recent interview where he revealed some ideas on a new Purge film, saying: "I would actually go back and I would try to talk about how it all started. That seems the natural next chapter in this, is to say, 'Alright, we've done this trilogy. We see how it got to this point of someone trying to end it - this presidential figure. Now let's go back and see how the fuck all this came about.' How did this country get to a place where we were now accepting this kind of atrocity, this terrible thing, each year? I think there's something interesting in that. I don't think I'll direct. I'm thinking of maybe writing or at least producing it, to make sure it stays true to what I like about the movies." (9/30/16)

The Purge trilogy writer/director James DeMonaco has expressed interest in returning in only a possible writing or producing capacity.

It's said that this would be a prequel that details how The Purge came to be. A television series is reportedly also in development.
