PROJECT DETAILS:

It looks like this project may now be dead, as it was announced early last year that George Cameron Romero partnered with Heavy Metal magazine to develop a zombie comic titled The Rise, which is based on this project's script. The comic will reportedly be serialized across several issues of the magazine label before being collected into a single graphic novel. While this movie was meant to be a prequel, the comic is said to be a "prologue," where the story takes place "at the genesis of the zombie apocalypse seen in Night of the Living Dead, entirely self-contained with its own themes, ideas, and arcs to explore." Unless Cameron Romero announces otherwise, this project is now believed to be dead. (1/20/21)

It's said that one of the main reasons the project never happened is because Cameron Romero didn't want to compromise the specific vision he had for the movie.

Previously had the name Rise of the Living Dead until the filmmakers ran into issues with the rights owners to Return of the Living Dead, forcing the title to change again, this time to simply Rise.

Dimitri Thivaios is the first person to be cast in the film. Dimitri is also known as Dimitri Vegas, who is part of a DJ duo called Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.

On the topic of the project, Cameron Romero was quoted saying: "Many of you know that I have been working to tell a story for many years… My dad read the script and called it “genius” (I’m not saying that from pride, it’s an actual quote and I have the email to prove it! :)) Many have approached me about making this film and I’ve said no to many because even though I’m not a “precious” artist, this one is special… this one is mine… this one… is my love letter to my dad… to his work… to the fact that he was once called the most dangerous filmmaker alive… to the fact that society in 1968 wanted to shut him up as much as they wanted to celebrate him…"

This project is written and directed by George A. Romero's son, Cameron, who has been developing it for several years. Originally it was simply known as "Origins" and had a successful crowdfunding campaign.

This is a prequel to George A. Romero's original Night of the Living Dead.
