It looks like DC is attempting to do a movie once again, as the new heads behind DC's new cinematic universe (James Gunn and Peter Safran) revealed that they're in early development of a new movie that will "investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing." It's also revealed that James Mangold (Logan) is in talks to direct. Mangold is reportedly a massive fan of the character and the stories and sources indicate that he approached Gunn and Safran with his ideas. It's important to note that while this may be in development, it's still going to be years before it moves into production, as DC already have a release strategy going and Mangold has another project to work on before moving forward with this. A well received big-budgeted 10-episode series was made and streamed on the DC Universe streaming service in 2019, though it only lasted one season.

Announced in 2009, the project had some troubles from the start, namely rights issues. Here's what producer Joel Silver said about the status back in 2011: "I don’t know, there are rights issues with Swamp Thing. I’m not sure if we could clear that up but we’re always working on something. We like the idea of making a 3-D version of that story, but it’s not something we can do right now." They must've never cleared that up, because there hasn't been any movement since. The project appears to be dead now. (8/23/16)

Years ago producers were quoted saying "We want a film with real Southern, dark horror overtones, a little bit like a classic Universal horror film."

Swamp Thing is supposedly a character that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has considered one of the "few remaining Holy Grails" in comics.

Wes Craven directed the 1982 movie, which was followed by the 1989 sequel from Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall).

This is a new live-action movie that's based on the comic by Len Wein and Berni Wrightson, which was later revamped by Alan Moore.
