The Tommyknockers

The original story "follows a town in Maine that falls under the influence of a dangerous gas from an unearthed space craft. The gas begins to transform the people, giving them enhanced abilities, but also making them violent and subject to an alien hive mentality. One man, thanks to a steel plate in his head, is immune to the effects and tries to stop the townspeople."

PROJECT DETAILS:

Scripted by Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect, Fantastic Four, Death Note).

Universal Pictures acquired this project in an apparent bidding war against Netflix and Sony. As previously reported, James Wan co-produces and may possibly direct.

Producer Larry Sanitsky was quoted saying: “It is an allegorical tale of addiction (Stephen was struggling with his own at the time), the threat of nuclear power, the danger of mass hysteria and the absurdity of technical evolution run amuck. All are as relevant today as the day the novel was written. It is also a tale about the eternal power of love and the grace of redemption."

Produced by Larry Sanitsky (who owns the rights and also produced the original mini-series) and James Wan (The Conjuring) via his Atomic Monster banner and Roy Lee (IT) via Vertigo Entertainment.

NBC had plans to do another mini-series adaptation in 2013, but plans fell through.

An ABC mini-series was made in 1993 and was a ratings hit at the time.

Based on the hit 1987 Stephen King novel with the same name, which is reportedly the second-best-selling King book of all time in its initial hard cover release and outsold other King classics such as It, The Shining and Carrie.
