Trick 'r Treat 2

No official plot yet, but (much like the first) it'll likely tell a bunch of semi-connected stories during Halloween.

PROJECT DETAILS:

Michael Dougherty offered more brief details on the project, revealing that Sam will face a new foe in the film, saying: "... we came up with a proper nemesis for Sam that would give Brian Cox a run for his money." Fans may remember actor Brian Cox as the cantankerous old neighbor to the killer/vampire wannabe Steven. In the film Cox hated Halloween and refused to hand out candy or decorate his home, leading to Sam paying the old man a visit where the two delivered a decent battle within his home. (10/25/23)

Michael Dougherty gave another update on the project, which still seems to be in early development. Here's what he said during a recent interview: "I will say this, because we said it last year at the Beyond Fest screening, the sequel is in active development with Legendary. I'll go so far as to say that we have several drafts of a script. I brought back the same storyboard artist I mentioned before, Simeon Wilkins, so we have a stack of storyboards and a good fat stack of concept art done by Breehn Burns as well. So it's inching along." Adding... "I’m hoping to talk to Legendary. They've been wonderful, like great collaborators. But so much of it is timing, and as you know, we just got out of a strike, so the next step, fingers crossed, would be looking at budget, of course, schedule, and all the rest. But we have a really, really great script for a sequel. And I brought in my co-writer from Krampus to do it with me. So Zach Shields and Todd Casey who do Krampus with me also helped me write Trick ‘r Treat Part 2." (10/24/23)

During a recent screening of the first movie, Michael Dougherty gave a brief update on this potential sequel, saying that he and the studio want it to happen, so while it's not officially greenlit, it is however, in "active development." This news is more promising compared to what was said a few years back (see below). (10/3/22)

Michael Dougherty gave a recent update on the project, which appears to be on hold or in some kind of limbo state again, saying: "I'm intrigued by the idea and it's completely up to Legendary. It's been a few years since we initially talked about it and there's been a regime change since then. They still have the property and they love it and there's still a long line of merchandise and a continuing line of comic books based on the film but the ball is in their court. The moment they say they're interested and ready to go, we'll see if the stars align." He goes on to add that maybe a sequel isn't even necessary: "At the same time, I think there's something to be said about not sequelising it. In a business that is obsessed with franchising and spinoffs and prequels and sequels, maybe there's something to be said about just leaving it alone." (10/25/19)

This shouldn't really come as a surprise, but Michael Dougherty recently revealed that his hope is to finally finish working on this sequel once he completes Godzilla: King of Monsters. Here's what he had to say: "My hope is that once Godzilla has been put to rest that I can dive back into [Trick ‘r Treat 2]. I would love to finish writing it in post-production [of Godzilla] and then I’d love to make it my next project. But we'll see." (10/25/17)

According to a recent interview with writer/director Michael Dougherty the project is still in development and gives us an idea on what his approach is for the sequel and the possibility of a trilogy, saying: "I think it’d be great to make it a trilogy, at least. So fingers crossed. For me, I think every film should explore a different aspect of Halloween. I felt like the first film was the very traditional, suburban Halloween that we all have some memory of. But as I’ve grown up over the years, I’ve lived everywhere from Columbus, Ohio to New York to L.A., and I find that the holiday is very different depending on where you live. Or even time periods. I don’t see why we should be limited to just present day stories. Halloween is an amazing holiday because it evolves depending on where you live and the time period." (8/26/16)

Not much to update other than the fact that Michael Dougherty is still working on the script. He detailed in a recent interview that they had to move forward with the Krampus project first and didn't want to rush this sequel, which is why it's taking some time. (9/11/15)

Michael Dougherty is reportedly still working on the script. (3/18/14)

While the first movie was intended to go theatrically, it's unknown if this sequel will. Considering the standard on-demand/limited theatrical release format that most films get nowadays, it's likely this will follow.

Michael Dougherty had a recent interview where he mentions what we may expect in the sequel, saying: "There are different archetypes I’d like to explore, different types of monsters. We covered werewolves, vampires, and zombies, but there’s a whole slew of different creatures out there that we haven’t tackled, and I think Sam would probably be pretty good buddies with. So I think it’s time to let them have their time in the sun."

It's rumored that this sequel may explore more of Sam and get into "some back story of who and what he actually is."

It was once said that writer Michael Dougherty originally intended to make a new Trick 'r Treat film every year or every other year during Halloween, where we'd follow a new set of characters and the only link being Sam. Although that never happened, he hopes it will this time.

Michael Dougherty returns to write and direct.

The first film was completed and supposed to hit theaters in October 2007, but was pushed back a year for unknown reasons. By 2008 the release was removed from the slate entirely. It was FINALLY released on DVD in October 2009.

The sequel to 2007's Trick 'r Treat from writer/director Michael Dougherty.
