Like the game, the film will revolve around an underground event that pits a number of combatants in a fight to the death. They are outfitted in armored weaponized cars that are pimped out with heavy weaponry that includes missiles, machine guns and/or drop mines and electrical charges. The proprietor of the race is Calypso, a string-puller dedicating to examining the human condition, such as what makes a peaceful man violent, what terrifies a violent man and who will make a Faustian bargain in which they risk their lives. The sole survivor will get any wish granted.

PROJECT DETAILS
  • Writer/director Brian Taylor had a recent interview where he details what ultimately happened to this project, saying: "Sony came out with a new version of the game, didn’t really sell that well. So they had this property that was kind of like this ‘tweener. It was a movie that felt like it needed to be $50 million, but they didn’t feel that the fanbase really merited that kind of movie; it really wanted to be more of a $15 million movie, but the nature of it with the set pieces would’ve just made it too big." He goes on to say how he envisioned the film: "That was gonna be badass… It’s batshit. It was kind of like Fury Road before Fury Road in a way. The set pieces in Twisted Metal were kind of the same thing. I’m not saying it would’ve been as good, I am definitely not." He adds that he had Nicolas Cage in mind for the Sweet Tooth character, saying: "Even Sweet Tooth is kind of like the Fury Road guy, you know it’s the mask and the clown with the crazy car. It kind of feels the same…" Sadly, Sony chose not to move forward because of the proposed budget..."It’s not worth doing it unless you can really push the envelope and do destruction people haven’t seen before. So I don’t know, it’s sort of in movie purgatory, but I tell ya it’s cool." (9/27/17)
  • Writer/director Brian Taylor previously helmed the Crank films and recently Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
  • We'll reportedly see a couple memorable characters appear in the film, such as "Sweet Tooth, a homicidal clown who drives an ice cream truck and Doll Face, a young woman who is trapped behind a porcelain mask and who drives an 18-wheeler."
  • This project was announced in 2012.
  • This is a live-action adaptation of the hit video game series with the same name.
