PROJECT DETAILS:
David Fincher revealed in a recent interview the ideas he had for the dead sequel, which apparently would've been similar to The Last of Us. Here's what he had to say: "It was a little like The Last of Us. I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff. In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite… they used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show." (10/25/23)

Not much of an update aside from one of the producers essentially saying that they still haven't completely given up on the movie just yet. Here's what they said, when asked about a sequel: "Someday. We love Max Brooks’ book. We love the universe of it. It doesn’t feel like the World War Z is done and over with." (1/21/20)

Despite the last report that pre-production was underway with filming aimed to begin this Summer, it looks like Paramount has pulled the plug on this project. Apparently the film's budget was one of the main reasons for the studio not officially moving forward, among other undisclosed things. It's possible the sequel may eventually find life again at another studio, but at the moment it's no longer in development. (2/5/19)

Filming is aimed to begin sometime in June 2019. (10/9/18)

Producer/actor Brad Pitt has recently signed on to a new Quentin Tarantino movie, reportedly resulting in the start date for this project to be pushed until possibly sometime this Fall. (3/1/18)

David Fincher gave a brief update on the project recently, saying: "I’ve been working for about a year now with [writer] Dennis Kelly on World War Z. We’re hoping to get a piece of material that’s a reason to make a movie not an excuse to make a movie." (10/23/17)

David Fincher is set to direct with production possibly starting sometime in the first quarter of 2018. (4/30/17)

One of the film's producers gave a brief update on the project, saying: "There’s a script that we’re incredibly happy with, and it’s just getting a couple of key deals closed… We hope [David Fincher] makes the movie." (3/23/17)

Apparently David Fincher is in talks to helm the pic, which would mark Brad Pitt and David Fincher's fourth film together, having previously collaborated on Se7en, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. (8/11/16)

Originally had a June 9th 2017 theatrical release.

Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) was originally going to direct, but left the project due to the strict schedule by the studio, which would have conflicted with another project he was working on. (1/13/16)

Written by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises).

Brad Pitt reprises his role from the first film.

Director Marc Forster will not return for the sequel.

The sequel to World War Z.
