A decade after Zombieland became a hit film and a cult classic, the lead cast (Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone) have reunited with director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and the original writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (Deadpool) for Zombieland 2: Double Tap. In the sequel, written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and Dave Callaham, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, these four slayers must face off against the many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

Some rumors have surfaced recently involving the film's storyline, which takes place several years after the events of the first. Here's the rumored storyline for the film: "..follows the gang as they attempt to find Little Rock after she ran away with an individual (unnamed due to spoilers). Columbus, Tallahassee, and Wichita embark on a journey that takes them all the way across the country to hopefully save LR from certain death. [Meanwhile] the regular, lumbering creatures from the first film have no interest in humans anymore, rendering them essentially extinct, they have been replaced by SUPER ZOMBIES—giant, muscular, incredibly tough beings that are only able to be killed through a headshot. A horde of these super-zombies has been migrating from city to city, destroying everything in its wake. And it’s up to the gang to finally put an end to this bloodshed, or face extinction themselves.What follows on this journey is plenty of laughs, thrills, and action that almost makes the first film look like child’s play in comparison." Co-writer Paul Wernick gave an update on the project, which may finally be moving forward. Here's what he had to say: "We’re going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland. Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don’t know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2… The hope is that we’re shooting that thing early 2019 for an October ’19 release. With the original cast, by the way. We are sitting on information that we can’t entirely share at this moment, but we can just say we think fans of Zombieland who have been hoping for a Zombieland 2, that we will grant their wish very, very soon." Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had a recent interview where they revealed the current status of the project, saying: "It is [in active development]. We're trying to get it going. All of our cast have read the script and love it. Reuben [Fleischer] is signed on. It's just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number. All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it's trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid." Adding... "We see [Sony Pictures Chairman] Tom Rothman pretty frequently now and we're pestering that dude. He's like, 'Please, enough with the Zombieland talk!' We're pestering him the way we pestered Fox on Deadpool. We're not letting it go. We really want to see Zombieland 2." (3/23/17)
It looks like producion is moving forward with the sequel and original Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Rheese have recently revealed that they're officially back as writers and the plan is to have all the original cast return, saying: "We’re on Zombieland 2 right now. We’re sitting with Woody [Harrelson] tomorrow and are going to sort of walk him through some of the stuff we want to do. All the cast is pretty excited.” (8/29/16)
Original Zombieland co-writer Rhett Reese had a recent interview where he revealed what's going on with the sequel, saying: "It’s actually still in development at Sony, they’ve had a couple writers take a crack at it, we’re still exec producers and we’re guiding and helping where we can and I think there’s still very much talk about it, but I think it has to be right. I think all the actors and [original ‘Zombieland' director] Ruben [Fleischer], all feel like there’s no reason to do it again if we’re not getting it exactly right." (2/22/16)

Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs Evil) directed a 30-minute pilot, which premiered on Amazon's Instant Video service around mid-April 2013. The pilot got mixed reviews and the studio ultimately decided not to move forward with the online series. Now it appears that the studio is once again interested in the project and is pursuing a sequel with Ruben Fleischer returning to direct. (9/30/14)
The Zombieland pilot has been filmed and is planning to air to Amazon Prime members online mid-April 2013. If successful, it will turn into a 12-episode online series. Meanwhile, the movie's sequel is on hold while the filmmakers work closely with the series. (3/26/13)
Despite the previous news of a film sequel likely not ever happening, it seems that intention of turning it into a series is still in the works. You can find some details on characters expected to be in the potential series here. (1/18/13)
Director Ruben Fleischer had an interview recently where he revealed that there's currently no plans to pursue the sequel, but he wouldn't quite rule it out entirely, saying: "I hate to do it, but I can say that there’s no immediate plans to make the movie. There’s no script, really, so the likelihood of it happening is slim. But I would not wanna put a nail in that coffin." When asked what his ideas were for the script, he said: "Needless to say it was a continuation of the original story with the same characters. I guess the only thing I could really say is that the threat to our heroes wasn’t only zombies, like they encounter other people that they’re all jockeying for positions." (1/10/13)
This project is now "on hold" with word that original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are working on a half-hour comedy series based on the movie. This works out for the writers since the first film was originally intended to be a television series to begin with. Fox is developing the show, with a potential 2012/2013 broadcast eyed. Assuming the show does proceed and become a success, it's said that the sequel to the movie will likely not happen. (10/26/11)
Director Ruben Fleischer offered an update on the project recently, saying: "I can promise you it's something we all want to do. I think the reality of it happening is getting less and less real. It's just harder and harder every day, because everybody's gotten really busy and the reality is that we've never had a script that we've all just fallen in love with. Until there's a script that we all can say, 'This is it,' it's more of an idea than an actual thing that we can work towards prioritizing and realizing." (7/18/11)
