Blood: The Last Vampire

On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year-old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old "halfling." Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires.

Using her superhman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the base's general that Saya learns of her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability for human connection.

LATEST NEWS

5/31/07
It's now confirmed that Ronny Yu is off the project as director and French director Chris Nahon (whom was originally reported before) is helming the feature. The title has also reverted back to the original Blood the Last Vampire. You can check the image gallery for a small still from the film. Thanks to VarietyAsiaOnline.

5/04/07
You can check the first behind-the-scenes shots of Ji-hyun Jun as Saya by clicking here. Thanks to KFCC.

3/27/07
Various sites are now reporting that Ronny Yu is still the director, despite variety saying otherwise a couple weeks ago. Filming is underway in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

3/11/07
Variety reports that actress Allison Miller is set to play alongside Jun Ji-hyun in the film. It's also reported that original director Ronny Yu has been replaced by Chris Nahon.

11/09/06
Being a fan of South Korean cinema this is surprisingly good casting news. Apparently actress Jun Ji-hyun will star in the film, which is scheduled to begin shooting in March '07. She was the lead in South Korean blockbusters such as My Sassy Girl (being remade in the US with the same name) and Il Mare (remade in the US as The Lake House) just to name a few.

9/28/06
Director Ronny Yu spoke with AICN a while back, where he revealed that unlike the anime that took place in the 60's this live-action film will go back to 1948 and take place after WWII in a US army base in Tokyo, Japan. They're currently scouting locations, with hopes to begin filming by the end of the year.

DETAILS

- Filming in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- Star Ji-hyun Jun will reportedly be credited as Gianna Jun for English-speaking countries in hopes of boosting her popularity in said countries, while she will keep her original name in South Korea.
- Actress Ji-hyun Jun is very popular in her native country of South Korea, where she starred in the popular romantic comedy My Sassy Girl, which is one of my favorite films.
- Originally had the original thought to have the title Blood Vampire.
- It's said that it'll be filmed in English and "other languages".
- Produced by Bill Kong (House of Flying Daggers, Hero).
- When the project was first announced Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky, Freddy Vs. Jason) was set to direct.
- Budgeted at $35-million.
- You can read my positive review for the anime here.
- Based on the 48-minute OVA by Hiroyuko Kitakubo in 2000.

The anime was great plain and simple, but making a live-action version is some what of a tricky thing. Devilman is one of my favorite anime but the live-action was aweful. I really do hope they pull it off and do the anime justice. If done in Asia then there is hope.

I Bought The Original 48-Minute O.V.A. So It's Definite That This Live-Action Version Is At Least Worth Seeing.

I really liked the anime movie. If they could add a bit more to the story I think it would be pretty good.
