The project is definitely on the fast track. The Ilya Salkind Company now has an updated site for the film, which states that Brad Dourif is still set to be in it, with news that the original Leatherface himself Gunnar Hansen. A nationwide talent search is in the works to find the young leads and despite not having an official cast set, you can view a promotional teaser via the links on your left.

Stephen Brooks is taking over the director's chair after James Dean Schulte's untimely passing. The old cast and companies associated with the project are said to no longer be involved and casting is underway shortly. You can check the second poster above for early promotional artwork for the film, which is going back to the original screenplay written by James Dean Schulte & Larry Kirchner. Despite the humor in the artwork, the film is described as a "serious, twisted, classic old school horror film".

A close source reports that Michael Davis (Monster Man) is set to direct with a production date of December '04.

Fango reported recently that there are talks of Stuart Gordon taking over the director's seat for this film, since Tobe Hooper has left to pursue another movie. So faar nothing is official.

Sadly, Fango reports that Nick Carter from The Backstreet Boys has joined the cast... *sigh* Tobe Hooper also spoke with Fango a little about the film, saying... "I also plan on reuniting with other actors from my previous films, including Amanda Plummer and Angela Bettis, who was sensational in my last movie, TOOLBOX MURDERS. Bill Moseley will be in BREW, too, but he may be unrecognizable [under makeup] in the movie. BREW’s co-writer, Adam Gierasch, will act in the movie as well, having played the handyman in TOOLBOX."

Hooper then added a little on Bill Moseley's character, saying he will play one person in a group of "old crazies living in an abandoned brewery, where the beer is made of rat blood. Nick Carter inherits the brewery as a tax deficit, and the place was being used as a theme-park haunted house. So he wants to reopen it. The crazies have been living on rats, but when the young people show up, they’d rather be eating something else..."

Co-writer Adam Gierasch adds... "It’s a horror/comedy. BREW is one giant SCOOBY DOO chase sequence."

9/23/03
Preproduction is starting in October, while production will finally begin near the end of November.

8/25/03
Writer James Dean Schulte gave me some background info and added his thoughts of Tobe and the film. Here's what he said...

"My original writing partner, Larry Kirchner, and I both are in the haunted house business in St. Louis. Mine was actually located in the Lemp Brewery, run by the infamous Lemp family, famous for four suicides in their family. their house, The Lemp Mansion, is listed as one of the ten most haunted places in america. It is now a fine restaurant and a B&B, after being restored to its former glory by Paul Pointer and his family."

He then added... "It will be great to see Tobe return to his roots and make a rocking horror film that should return him to his rightful place among current directors. Jace and Adam took our script and brought some new, great things to it, taking it up a notch and giving it a real feel. The weaving in and out of the true story will help it find its audience."
