Grindhouse

No official plot yet, but it will contain two unique stories from each director. Robert's will be a zombie segment called "Planet Terror," which is said to be a zombie homage that concerns a sheriffs' department dealing with an outbreak of infected lunatics called "sickos". Tarantino's will be a slasher called "Death Proof," which is reportedly about a psycho who stalks and kills beautiful women with his car.

I've updated the rest of the cast for Tarantino's segment "Death Proof". Heading the cast is the villian "Stuntman Mike" played by none-other-than Kurt Russell, replacing Mickey Rourke. Also, it seems that each segment will increase to full-length features instead of the reported 60-minutes, which means we'll get two films in one. This movie is turning out to be very awesome and seemingly one of the most highly anticipated upcoming horror films. Lastly, if you head over to the Arrow you'll see some snapshots of pics and items that were on display at Comic Con.

Tarantino and Rodriguez spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the film recently, and some of what they had to say:
Tell me about each of your Grind House films...
TARANTINO Our original idea was to do a horror double feature. The genre I wanted to tackle was slasher films, because I'm a big fan of late-'70s, early-'80s slasher films. The only thing was, what makes them so good is the genre is so rigid. And I had an idea about a guy who kills girls with his car as opposed to a machete, and I put it in a slasher-film structure. Other than the big car moments, though, my thing could be a Eugene O'Neill play. These girls just talk and talk and talk. If it wasn't for the car stuff, I could do my thing on stage.
So it's like Christine meets Long Day's Journey Into Night...
TARANTINO Yeah, but with more slasher elements! [Laughs] It's called Death Proof. I'm casting right now; more than likely the killer will be Mickey Rourke.
Robert, tell me about your film.
RODRIGUEZ Mine's a zombie movie called Planet Terror. It feels like a John Carpenter movie that took place between Escape From New York and The Thing. I wanted to do a zombie script a while back because there hadn't been any good zombie movies in a while. I got about 30 pages into it, and then all these zombie movies came out. So I thought, Well, I don't have to make them zombies — there could be other reasons why they're like this. They're infected people. Quentin, what's that story?
TARANTINO There was this Umberto Lenzi zombie movie in the '70s called Nightmare City, and a while ago some friends of mine were going to meet him in Rome, and I told them to tell him how much I loved Nightmare City. And they told him. And he goes, ''Zombies? What's theees zombies? They're infected people!''

I've added a handful of names to the cast, most of which haven't been officially announced. You can also check above for more details on the speculated plots for the two films. Lastly, it looks like the film is keeping the "House" addition to the title.
2/16/06
Variety reports that each segment will run 75-minutes, meaning the overall running time could hit the 2 1/2-hour mark. Also, the trailers between the segments will be helmed by actual directors and may even be for real movies instead of fake ones.
2/07/06
The title has lost the "House" part and is now what you see above.
12/04/05
The film will have a September debut.
10/27/05
According to a report at Coming Soon! John Jarratt has been added to the cast.
9/27/05
Tarantino spoke with MTV this time about his upcoming projects, and brushing over Grind House details. In the interview he reveals the title for his one-hour segment is Death Proof -- described as a slasher film, but with a car instead of a knife. Supposedly the character will run into (get it? bwahahah!) zombies and what-not. He also revealed that Rodriguez's segement is entitled Planet Terror, which Tarantino feels may be more violent, although his script isn't finished.
8/10/05
Robert Rodriguez spoke with MTV recently about his various projects, including Grind House. In it he says how his story will probably be more violent than Tarantino's and how he'll have Danny Trejo as the hero of one of the trailers that'll play between the stories. He was also quoted saying how he's got one of the best characters hes ever come up with in his head and that his segment will be "done like real Roger Corman-style, where some of my cast will show up in his movie, but as the characters in his movie. It's almost like this is our troupe of actors. One of the trailers will feature someone in the cast of his movie, in another movie that doesn't exist."
DETAILS
- Film in Austin TX.
- Tarantino's Death Proof will run at 90-minutes, while Rodriguez' Planet Terror will only be 80-minutes.
- There are supposedly four fake trailers added between the films, each directed by Eli Roth, Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie and Robert Rodriguez.
- Kurt Russel replaced Mickey Rourke to play the killer "Stuntman Mike" in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof segment.
- The two segments were originally only going to be an hour long, but thanks to Rodriguez and Tarantino constantly adding to the script, they were given the greenlight to make both segments full-length features, essentially giving us two films in one.
- Originally set to get a December 1st theatrical release.
- You may remember the last horror colaboration Tarantino and Rodriguez worked on was From Dusk Till Dawn.
- This may be a first of a series of films.
- Supposedly trailers and bonus material from other filmmakers will be placed in between the stories to complete the "grindhouse" experience.
- It's said that this film is a throwback to 42nd Street-style double bills of the past.
