I Am Legend
 
Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by "the Infected"—victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. All the while, the Infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville's every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But his blood is also what The Infected hunt, and Neville knows he is outnumbered and quickly running out of time.

Well, according to sources at IESB, they're reporting that Johnny Depp never signed onto the film and his character "Phillip" isn't even in the script. On another note -- the site that reported the Depp rumor, Blackfilm, is now reporting that Salli Richardson and Alice Braga have joined the cast.

JoBlo reports that Depp won't be playing the head vamp in the film, but a new character that Will Smith will meet up with later on named Phillip. Also, the script will supposedly have the vamps not speak at all and be more primal and unintelligent, as opposed to the smart and talkative vamps in the original short story.

Well any indication that this would be a semi-horror flick has pretty much been thrown out the window, as it was recently announced that Will Smith will take the lead. I predict a lot pointless wise-cracks and cheesy one-liners.

There's not a whole lot to report on this project aside from the fact that according to the NY Dails News, Warner Bros is renting out the Kingsbridge Armory in New York for seven months to film. Apparently they're really interested in the "creepy" interior.
DETAILS
- Originally said to have a Summer '07, then a November 21st release.
- It's said that the film will follow closer to the 1971 remake The Omega Man rather than the original novel by Matheson.
- Johnny Depp was rumored to have a role in the film as a character named "Phillip".
- This would be the third adaption of the novel. The first being The Last Man on Earth, and the second as The Omega Man.
- This project has been trying to get picked up for almost a decade. It was one of the first movies listed on UHM, and around that time Ridley Scott was supposedly going to direct with Arnold Schwarzenegger set to star. In a more recent rumor Michael Bay and Will Smith were attached.
- Warner Bros. is fast-tracking the proect.
- Director Francis Lawrence also directed Constantine.
- David Heyman, Akiva Goldsman, Neal Moritz and Erwin Stoff are producing.
- Akiva Goldsman rewrote the script.
- Adapted by Mark Protosevich, but will undergo re-writes with the supervision of director Francis Lawrence and the producers.
- Based on the Richard Matheson novel.
