Star Gaspard Ulliel spoke with ET recently, revealing that Hannibal is indeed in his early stages of cannibalism, where he discovers the darker side of himself and begins to enjoy the killing. He also reveals how the audience will even have sympathy for the young Hannibal, even after the killings. Expect some "really nasty killings" that "aim to repulse".

Recent reports are saying that young French actor Gaspard Ulliel (A Very Long Engagement) may step in as the young Hannibal.

The old title "The Lecter Variations" has been replaced with "Behind the Mask". Producer Dino De Laurentiis was quoted saying... "It is a revenge story that shows why he became a cannibal, but he kills people that audiences want to see killed. So while there is a natural revulsion, the sympathy toward Hannibal remains."

Writer Thomas Harris was quoted saying... "Lecter was born into a very rich family but the war destroyed his family and killed his parents. He was left with his sister with whom he had a very close relationship."

DETAILS

- Originally titled Behind the Mask before it was retitled to Young Hannibal, then lastly Hanninal rising, which is also the name of the new novel.
- Actress Gong Li plays Lady Murasaki, the wife of Lecter's uncle and the woman responsible for creating Hannibal into such a cannibal.
- Production is supposedly set for September in Prague.
- It's said that actor Anthony Hopkins may make a small appearance in the film or have some sort of narrative role.
- Production was original said to begin in May of '05.
- Scouting locations will be held in Lithuania, The Czech Republic, and France.
- Based on the new novel by Thomas Harris, who is also writing the script.
- Produced by Dino and Martha De Laurentiis.
- The old title "Lecter Variations" referred to Bach's Goldberg Variations which have been a recurring musical reference in the Lecter saga to date.
- Universal will once again distribute.
- Producer Dino De Laurentiis said that four actors will be required to play young Lecter at the ages of 12, 16, 20 and 25..
