CURRENT STATUS

Don Coscarelli has recently said the following about the project: "the epic Phantasm project, which was originally called Phantasm 1999 and had a script by Roger Avary, will definitely not be made. The screenplay was hyper violent, epic in scope, had a terrific role for Bruce Campbell in it, but we just couldn’t find a studio exec who was visionary enough to see the potential."
He then added... "But there’s still life in the old franchise, though! The fans and the cast members are always asking me when the next one’s going to be as well, so we rolled around ideas and finally we have a screenplay written. It’s really quite interesting in that it answers a lot of questions; now it’s just a question of finding the opportunity to get this thing going." Thanks to DC.

Haven't heard anything new. It's probably in a limbo stage.
LATEST NEWS
3/17/05
Dread Central got some unofficial details on the project. They are reporting that the film will re-establish the premise and characters from the previous films. They reveal other details, but as of right now it's hard to say what will really happen or not. Read more here.

After years of speculation, it looks like a sequel is officially moving forward. According to the Hollywood Reporter, New Line is in the final talking stages with original writer/director Don Coscarelli to bring forth the much-talked about sequel. Apparently Coscarelli would serve only as producer, which means someone new will have to go behind the cameras. If the film does well it's said that it would be part of a new trilogy for the series. Although no cast is signed, it's pretty much a guarantee that we'll see Reggie and Angus return. You can read talk from Don Coscarelli about previous talk on a supposed remake and further stuff on the upcoming sequel here.

I got some info from a tipster that attended the San Diego Comic Con recently, where he supposedly spoke with star Reggie Banister in which he revealed that the script for the film by Roger Avary is over with and director Don Coscarelli wrote the script himself and plan for the production to start rolling later this year. Obviously nothing is official, so this can only be treated as a rumor for the time being. Thanks to "Chad".
5/11/04
Although this is nothing new, I figured I'd post it anyway: director Don Coscarelli talked with Fango recently, where he briefly mentioned how he's still interested in doing this film, and that Reggie Bannister and Angus Scrimm are "still in great shape and raring to go".

A bit of old news here, but I thought I'd post it since people are still wondering about this film. Apparently posted at the Phantasm's End message board was this little message stating that Roger Avary's script for the film was declined due to the high budget needed. So I guess that leaves the plot a mystery now, since there's no script. On the brighter side, director and creator Don Coscarelli will write the script (or has already since the news is a bit old). Also you can check an interview at Arrow in the Head with Justin Zaharczuk, where there's brief talk on this last installment in the Phantasm series. Thanks to a UHM regular for the heads up.

My family and I had the honor meeting Mr. Bannister 5 years ago just before Halloween. I can't believe it's been that long.
Anyway .....Reggie and his wonderful wife had put on a spook house for the benefit of the local school kids and we really injoyed it.
We drove up from San Diego to Crestline. Phantasm 5 has been long awaited as my son and I really love all the moves and have quite a collection. Come on Rege get em on the Ball.
