They’re back! Every year the population of sleepy Lake Havasu explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for a single, wild weekend - the 4th of July, a riot of sun, drunken fun and sex-crazed mayhem. But this year, there's something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers. Havasu sits in the crater formed by a prehistoric volcanic eruption, and when earth tremors tear open a crack in the lake floor, all hell breaks through.

Although official word has yet to be released, STYD reports that the film will get a late July '09 theatrical release, and it also may in fact be in 3-D. Hopefully some sort of confirmation on this will be released shortly.

- Alexandre Aja (High Tension, Hills Have Eyes) will write and direct.
- A French company called Wild Bunch is behind this.
- Budgeted between 19 to 24 million.
- Canton and Toberoff will produce while Steve Barnett, J. Todd Harris, Vincent Maraval and Chako VanLeeuwen will executive produce.
- Chuck Russell wrote the script using elements of drafts by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, as well as the original John Sayles script that Joe Dante directed for the original. That came from a story by Richard Robertson.
- This is a remake of the 1978 film with the same name.

I never thought of Aja as the type of director who would fall for this gimmicky behavior (spoofing, 3-D, and remakes of suspect movies in the first place), but it looks like he's jumping into the mainstream pot...head-first.
They're filming this thing all over Lake Havasu right now. Filming is down in the channel in front of Kokomos this morning. They'r'e having to share location time with Girls Gone Wild trying to get their last shots from Memorial day. This is going to be funny because everyone is going to recognize the location, wonder how they're going to deal with the London Bridge. All of the Havasu chicks have been running around town telling everyone "I'm going to be topless in the movie", just another example of art imitating (Havasu)life.
