Immediately follows the events of the first movie, where reporter Rachel Keller (Watts) and son Aidon (Dorfman) move away from the big city life of Seattle to the small town of Asheville, Oregon. She's then thrown back into the mix when cases of the cursed tape resurffaces and developments arise which threaten her relationship with her son. I've added more to the cast. Meagan Fay will play a nosy neighbor to Naomi Watt's character, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead will play a younger version of Sissy Spacek's character.

7/14/04
The release date has supposedly been pushed back to sometime next year for reasons unknown to me.

6/28/04
A scooper sent in a photo he took with the cam on his cellphone, which apparently shows a fountain in the background, which is a small keypart in the film. It's supposedly a scene where a young Evilyn attempts to drown a newborn Samarai before the nuns rush out and stop it. Not much to look at but interesting none-the-less. The photo was taken when filming resumed in downtown L.A.

6/09/04
Filming is going on today to Friday along the Washington side of the Astoria-Megler Bridge.

6/08/04
You can read up on an article posted at the Herald Net that talks about the film going back to the original farm shown in the first movie for some new shoots that'll appear in the upcoming film.

Emily VanCamp (Everwood) is in final negotations to join the cast of the film.

4/19/04
Veteran actress Sissy Spacek will return to the horror genre by joining the cast to this film.

4/16/04
You can check a script review for the film here. Also, I heard about Daveigh Chase (Samara) possibly not being in the film a while back, but I decided not to post anything since it was an early rumor, then recently more sites have been reporting on it and it seems that IMDB has even taken her name off the cast list. Even the Ringworld site posted on it over a week ago. Apparently since there's little Samara on-screen time, there's no need for Daveigh to return, and even if they needed Samara, they could use a stand in.

4/14/04
Simon Baker has been added to the cast.

3/26/04
Coming Soon! recently reported that the film will film in Astoria, Oregon this May and they supposedly chose the location because it "captured the mood" of the film.

3/11/04
Its been announced that original Ringu director Hideo Nakata is in negotiations to direct this film.

3/10/04
Original director Noam Murro dropped out from the director's chair due to "creative differences" and Dreamworks are now seeking a new person to head the project. It's said that a new director will be named as soon as this week.

1/23/04
Someone over at Dark Horizons sent some info on what's goin' on with the film, saying... "Ehren Krueger, is obviously writing the sequel. The script is part prequel/part sequel with the first thirty five pages being a fleshed out backstory. Right now this is being jettisoned as Dreamworks wants to make that section of the script into a completely independent prequel film (which Ehren will at least write the treatment for, if not the whole film) and thus is busy trying to come up with a beginning for the movie and still be able to make its march start date. While he works on that, Dreamworks is looking for a hire end closer to do a couple steps on the second and third acts".

1/16/04
Samara herself, Daveigh Chase, briefly spoke with SciFi Wire, saying... "I will [go back to work] soon. They're going to start filming in March. Unfortunately, I can't say anything about it, [but] it will definitely be horrifying."
She went on to say.. "They're waiting until the last minute [to show me]," she said. "I'm pretty sure I'll get to kill everybody again. That'll be fun."

11/18/03
Executive producer Walter Parkes, briefly talked with SciFi Wire and revealed that the movie will likely start shooting in March '04. He was quoted saying... "We're actively trying to do our first pre-production right now." When asked about the plot Parkes said... "It will come out of the issues raised in our first movie."

11/05/03
Noam Murro is set as director.

9/12/03
Daveigh Chase has been added to the cast.

8/03/03
A release date has been set.

12/12/02
The Ring producer Walter Parkes talked with SCI FI Wire that the upcoming sequel will be both a prequel and a sequel, like the second Godfather film.

Parkes was quoted saying... "Godfather is the greatest movie ever made, and The Ring is not, but they are both about the creation of a fascinating monster. You were fascinated at the creation of Michael and Vito Corleone, and I think you're fascinated by this little girl Samara and where she came from. For that reason, I thought, like Godfather II, maybe we could look forward and look backwards. So we're trying to make arrangements with director Gore Verbinski and writer Ehren Kruger, who worked on the first one. We just have to roll up our sleeves and get going on it quickly."

Parkes said that he doesn't want to make only a prequel, saying... "Unfortunately, I don't know any prequels that quite work as well as sequels do. Red Dragon was a little disappointing. It didn't make $100 million dollars. There's an interesting prequel to be made, which has to do with the parents who give birth to Samara and what happens. That was so beautifully explored in Rosemary's Baby, the kind of anticipation you have about giving birth to a first child and your fears and hopes and all of that, and what happens if this child has powers? There's something really interesting in all that."

The original Ring was followed by both a sequel and a prequel, upon which Parkes hopes to improve in the American counterpart... "They did a prequel and a sequel in Japan, and both of them are very narratively unsatisfying. What was interesting about The Ring was that it was equal parts conventional western horror movie and equal parts very particular ambiguous Japanese mystical spiritual experience. But it had enough of both to be very delicious. Now that people know the secret of Samara and know what the videotape does, it's going to be very hard to invent something which is as fresh as the first one, but that also carries forward that kind of duality. We're going to try, though."
