Saw 2

While investigating the bloody aftermath of a grizzly murder, Detective Eric Mason (Donnie Wahlberg) has the feeling that it is the work of Jigsaw, the notorious killer who disappeared leaving a trail of bodies - and parts - behind.
And Mason is right.
Jigsaw is at work again. But instead of two people locked in a room with only one unthinkable way out, there are eight. Eight strangers – unaware of their connection to each other -- forced to play out a game that challenges their wits and puts their lives in jeopardy.

Co-writer Leigh Whannell had an interview with SuicideGirls recently, revealing small bits of info on some upcoming projects, where he brushed over Saw 2. When asked whether the jawtrap would makes it return to the sequel, Leigh was quoted saying: I wouldn’t say the jawtrap is back but there is something that is twice as sick and twice as fucked up as the jawtrap which I didn’t think could be achieved.
Then he confirms that actress Shawnee Smith will have a bigger role, saying: She gets really involved in the story. We are really exploring the story of Jigsaw [Tobin Bell] so it’s really his story. We all know that he is slowly dying of cancer so SAW 2 will have to be his final hurrah. I just got back from Toronto where they are shooting. They are all such good actors so seeing Donnie Wahlberg and Tobin Bell going at it is a thrill.

Details have been pouring on the project recently. JoBlo posted a brief update on the project that confirmed a couple actors from the previous film are returning, but also a new character will be introduced: "Det. Eric Mason (yet to be cast), who has caught the Jigsaw killer and is looking to put a stop to his current game, already in progress. That game includes a house where unlucky participants are imprisoned and forced to off each other in brutal ways (similar to how Smith's character was forced to kill an innocent man to save her own life in the first film) while a series of video cameras capture the killings. What Mason doesn't realize is that the game is unfolding right in front of him..."
Also BD briefly spoke with producer and original writer/director James Wan on the film, where he revealed more info: "Well, without giving too much away...you find out that Shawnee's character did not learn to appreciate the second chance that she earned from the first film. And Tobin's character, Jigsaw, is a prominent figure in this one. In the first film, he was hardly seen but his presence was felt everywhere. And since his identity has been revealed, we're now bringing him to the forefront of the story and exploring him in depth. People will get to see what makes this guy ticks."
He then adds some reasoning behind all the madness... "Jigsaw is dying, but he's looking to beat his illness. And he believes, with his last set of games, it will provide him with the cure for his cancer. And what is the cure for death... Immortality."

Saw producer Gregg Hoffman spoke recently about the status of the film, saying a script is currently being worked on and it's likely that creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell will only have an executive-producer role since they've been quoted to wanting to move on to other projects. Their involvement should be revealed within the next few weeks.

Original Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell talked with Moviehole about the DVD release of the first film and some talk on the sequel. Here's what they said: "[The] Producers are definitely talking about it yeah. We don't know exactly know what our full involvement is yet. We'd say we'll be executive producers or overseeing it. It's only in the early stages so I may have a hand in the writing. The film just opened, so it feels kinda early to be talking about a sequel. From the moment the film opened at 18.3, the sequel gets greenlit the next day. We haven't had time to think about it. But the producers have had time; they find time to talk about the sequel. I don't think I'll be directing".
