Silent Hill

Rose cannot accept the knowledge that her daughter Sharon is dying of a fatal disease. Over the protests of her husband, she flees with her child, intending to take the girl to a faith healer. On the way, she ends up driving through a portal in reality, which takes her to the eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill. Sharon disappears in Silent Hill, and Rose follows what she thinks is her daughter's silhouette all over town. It's soon clear the town is not like any place she's ever been. It's inhabited by a variety of creatures and a living darkness that descends and literally transforms everything it touches. The human inhabitants—the ones who are left—are trapped and fighting a losing battle against the Darkness.

Joined by a cop named Cybil, who has been sent to bring her and Sharon back, Rose searches for her little girl while learning the history of Silent Hill and that Sharon is just a pawn in a larger game. To save her daughter, Rose makes a deal with a demon in the form of a little girl, and allows the forces of darkness to take the town and destroy those who tried to destroy the demon.

A French magazine had an interview with director Christopher Gans and until now American readers were unable to read the article. The translated piece can be found here. In it he answers why most of the cast consists of women, and how the film is based on the first game, but incorporates elelements from the second and third. Also don't expect a lot of gore in the film, but expect an R-rating. Thanks to "Joseph".

Effects man Patrick Tatopoulos had an interview with IGN recently about his work on the film, saying: "... the director [Christophe Gans] told me, 'Patrick, I want those guys to look like they are made of plastic,' which is exactly the opposite of what we do usually. We try to make them look like they are not plastic. There's a style to the videogame which is quite amazing. They all look like dolls – you know, surreal… That's the quality that the director likes.

So with Silent Hill, the cool thing is we take this world and create new designs that you haven't seen before. I won't tell you too much, but there are things you don't know from the videogame – much crazier stuff even. But like the rapiers, all those characters, are so cool. What we had to make work…when you do a videogame and you put a sword in the hand of a guy, the sword is like 500 pounds, like big as the guy almost. The helmet goes almost from the ceiling to the floor… So, the challenge of Silent Hill was 'How do you make this work?' We had to rethink completely the technology we use today. All the things we have used before, we barely used on that movie. We used a different type of fabric, we used rubber to create that different [look]. Initially, there will be a mix of CGI and practical, but we did deal pretty much in practical… That was a fantastic shoot.

An April wide release is set.

Star Sean Bean spoke with Coming Soon! about his current projects, one of which was Silent Hill. In it he reveals how the film has a "bizarre" and "spooky" feel to it thanks to European director Christophe Gans. He also went on to talk a bit about the plot, saying: "It's about this place called Silent Hill, and our daughter is kind of disturbed about it. She keeps mentioning it, and she's trying to get out of the house and go there, so my wife decides that it might be a good idea to take her there to confront her fears. She gets involved with a very murky and dangerous world, very creepy, which is all in different time levels, as well. I'm in the real world and I'm trying to find them, but we're on different planes, so it's quite interesting, because I can hear her, but I can't see her. The way he shoots it is just constant fog and cobwebs around the Silent Hill world, while the real world is more normal."

6/23/05
According to writer Roger Avary's blog Silent Hill 2's Pyramid Head villian will be in this film. He also makes brief mention of 4-ft "gray children".

5/07/05
Although all the set pics are interesting, it is getting rather tiresome considering they're mostly just pictures of buildings, but at least we viewers get a general idea as how the town may look. On the topic, you can view even more new pics here, and this time you can feast your eyes on some cars as well.

4/29/05
EDIT: The NAME OMITTED source requested the pics to be removed.
Set photos have been popping up all over the net lately and I've got a couple more for you today. They are of Armoury Hall, which is a 1906 heritage property in Burford. Apparently they are simulating a night-sequence, hence the dark cloth over the windows. Apparently it's for an orphanage scene. Also another article on the filming can be found here. In it they detail a lot of the recent filming and make note of some of the actors and what characters they play. An interesting note would be that Deborah Kara Unger would be playing Dahlia, a character Silent Hill fans may remember. In the article they describe her as a "witch-like character". Thanks to NAME OMITTED and "Tony".

4/27/05
I've added more to the cast. Actor Sean Bean (Equilibrium) will play Radha Mitchell's Husband, while Jodelle Ferland will play the daughter.

4/23/05
Radha Mitchell (Finding Neverland) is the first cast member announced. She'll be playing the lead. The rest of the cast will be announced shortly. Speaking of which, various people have been reported to have seen actress Angelina Jolie around the area, speculating that she may have a role in the film, but I'd pass that off as a rumor for now. Filming begins in Ontario on Monday (25th) and will continue until July 22nd. You can also view more photos of the town here.

4/17/05
Some set pics have been popping up on the net. You can check heaps of pics of the street in Brantford Ontario Canada that will house some of the filming here, as well as an article on the real town being used here. Thanks to "Tony".

4/12/05
Filming was originally said to begin in April, but a scooper recently sent in info that they are still in pre-production and an official cast still hasn't been set, or at least hasn't been announced yet. Also it seems as though they are still scouting locations in Canada. Either way, I'm sure if they have no cast yet they're in the final stages of signing some on, and if they're is a cast they're keeping'em under wraps until the time is right.

3/03/05
The film is said to likely be filmed in Ontario Canada in April.

2/24/05
Fango got word that make-up artist Paul Jones (Resident Evil: Apocalypse) will be working on the gore effects while Patrick Tatopoulos (The Cave, Underworld: Evolution) will take care of the creature designs. Filming begins in April.

2/17/05
The official plot has finally been revealed. Looks as though it's going to be very similar to the first game.

10/21/04
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film has been picked up by Focus Features for the international distribution rights and it's set to go behind cameras March of '05.

10/18/04
Roger Avary talked about the speed-writing process with the script on his journal, here's what he said: "I spent three intensive weeks with Christophe, rewriting the treatment to perfection, and then Nicholas did another pass on it. Then, I sat down and over the next three weeks put together the first draft. Now, although we have something that resembles a finished script, with dialog and formatting and little details worked out -- it's still technically a pre-draft. I spent today with Christophe taking character notes -- examining what doesn't work. And there's plenty. Keep in mind, no script is a movie. It's a blueprint toward production...and the blueprints tend to change along the way. The reason we wrote this FAST is because it's a GO MOVIE. Christophe and his production team desperately need something to begin the boarding and budgeting process. They need to plan for the massive special effects in the film. They need to begin all of the preproduction that goes into making a movie -- they begin shooting in February, after all. So, although I'll be leaving Paris and going back home to my orange farm and cats, work on "Silent Hill" will continue. It's quite likely that writing will continue right up into shooting. So everybody relax. We're making a movie here, not just a script."

10/14/04
According to Roger Avary on his online journal, he's just finished the script for the film. Thanks to "Tony".

9/21/04
Writer Roger Avary talks about how Silent Hill has consumed his life in his online journal located here.

7/15/04
IMDB has posted a plot, but knowing them it's probably false. Either way, here it is: Deep in the back woods of Oregon, Heather and her dad find themselves stranded in a small, strangely deserted resort town. What they don't know is demon's monsters, and undead run amok causing chaos and a hell Heather will not be able to get herself out of. To add even more terror, her dad has gone missing. Based on the horror video game series, Sielnt HIll posses a secret to her past that will bring 10 folds of meyhem upon the entire planet. The Revelation has commenced. Thanks to "Phil".
