Director Takashi Shimizu spoke with SciFi Wire, revealing the following: "For The Grudge 2, I was going for this mystery that was never there in Grudge 1, and I think that's going to fulfill the audience. ... There's a secret about Kayako's childhood life, so that's part of the big mystery. And the other mystery is, this grudge will never stop, and it's going to ... spread. And how is it going to get spread? That's another mystery."

He then added... "The Grudge 1 was a complete remake of Ju-On 1, meaning the storyline was very similar. Basically, it's the same. But Grudge 2 is actually different from Ju-On 2, and I don't think I would have accepted this job if it was going to be [the] same storyline. And because it was a different story, you know, my motivation was a bit higher, and I actually enjoy doing this."

4/02/06
The official site is up and running, but there's not much there at the moment.

3/07/06
I've added more names to the cast. The film is currently shooting in Japan and will continue until the end of April.

2/11/06
Jennifer Beals has been added to the cast.

1/28/06
Amber Tamblyn will star in the film as Sarah Michelle Gellar's younger sister. Also Arielle Kebbel and Teresa Palmer have joined the cast.

12/08/05
Writer Steven Susco spoke with DC again about Gellar's return to the film as well as dropping a few details in terms of what we can expect, saying: "SMG is back. Without giving anything away, we've all been pretty focused on making a sequel that has a strong raison d’etre - a second chapter to an evolving story, instead of a sequel that’s made just because the first one performed well. I think we’re making good strides towards that goal. Personally, I just want to make sure that it’s the kind of film that satisfies fans of the first one...and hopefully pulls in some new fans as well." Filming begins January in Tokyo.

12/04/05
DC got word from writer Steven Susco about the status of the film, which he states that he's off to Japan and casting is underway for a possible January 30th filming date.

DETAILS

- The backstory behind the "Kayako" spirit will be revealed in this film.
- Original Japanese child-actor who played "Toshio" in all the remakes is replaced by Ohga Tanaka.
- Actor Ryo Ishibashi will only have a brief cameo appearance once again as Detective Nakagawa.
- Japanese actress Takako Fuji will play the role as Kayako once again, making it her fifth time.
- This is teen pop-star Misako Uno's feature film debut.
- You can expect some of the origins of "the grudge" curse to be revealed.
- Original director Takashi Shimizu is returning.
- Sarah Michelle Gellar will only have a small role in the film, and she's only there to pass on the curse to her younger sister.
- There's no word whether this sequel will be another remake or if it's going a different direction like The Ring 2 did.
- Sony hopes to make another sequel after this to end it as a trilogy. The original films only had one sequel, so a third would obviously need to take a new approach into the series.

- Due to the success of the first film, this sequel is on the "fast track".
- The obvious sequel to the first Grudge.
