The Mist

Following a violent thunderstorm, artist David Drayton and a small town community come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist. Local rumors point to an experiment called the 'The Arrowhead Project' conducted at a nearby top-secret military base, but questions as to the origins of the deadly vapor are secondary to the group's overall chances for survival. Retreating to a local supermarket, Drayton and the survivors must face-off against each other before taking a united stand against an enemy they cannot even see!

Director Frank Darabont spoke with CHUD recently, where he revealed details on the project. He was quoted saying how casting is underway and that being it's low-budget that it's on the fast-track, with hopes of filming by February '07. He also clarifies how this won't be filled with a cast of teenie-boopers, which brings light to maybe the project will receive an R-rating and not the dreaded PG-13 rating we've all grown used to seeing in mainstream horror.
10.20.06
It looks like the project really is finally picking up since Variety recently released an article stating that Frank Darabont is set to direct, though, we've known this for years, but at least it's now official. Production is said to begin possibly Spring '07.
10.13.06
It looks like the project is not dead yet, as MTV reports that according to actor Thomas Jane, he's supposed to have a role in the film. Though, it doesn't look like the cameras will roll anytime soon since the actor is currently busy working on the Punisher sequel. Sadly, that's about all the article indicates, so although it's not dead, it doesn't seem to have progressed much from the last report over a year ago.
3.17.05
Lilja's Library got work from director Frank Darabont on the film. Here's what he said: "Whether it's a studio picture or not, I want to go with a very gritty, low-budget indie approach. Big-budget gloss would work against the material, plus I'm excited about trying my hand at a more seat-of-the-pants filmmaking approach on this one than I've used in the past...I'll use whatever approach works best, I want to go as old-school as possible with the effects. It's a rather old-school story anyway; it feels like a movie that might have been made in the '50s. The thing to bear in mind about THE MIST is that you don't actually see that much as King wrote it; it's the stuff you don't see that scares you, sort of like in JAWS. I want to maintain the tension of King's story rather than overload the screen with CGI monsters".
2.28.05
According to Lilja's Library, writer/director Frank Darabont is is weeks away from finishing the script.
12.21.04
Writer/director Frank Darabont spoke about the project to Fango recently. Here's what he said: "I am at this very moment writing the adaptation of THE MIST. Depending on a few factors, it may well be the next movie I direct, possibly next year. Finally, my low-budget monster flick! And no, it will not be for television. There’s been some confusion out there in geek land about that."
He continues with what he'd like to do with the film... "Whether it’s a studio picture or not, I want to go with a very gritty, low-budget indie approach. Big-budget gloss would work against the material, plus I’m excited about trying my hand at a more seat-of-the-pants filmmaking approach on this one than I’ve used in the past."
He then added... "I’ll use whatever approach works best, so probably [expect] a mix of things. But I want to go as old-school as possible with the effects. It’s a rather old-school story anyway; it feels like a movie that might have been made in the ’50s. The thing to bear in mind about The Mist is that you don’t actually see that much as King wrote it; it’s the stuff you don’t see that scares you, sort of like in JAWS. I want to maintain the tension of King’s story rather than overload the screen with CGI monsters."
9.25.04
According to SciFi Wire writer/director Frank Darabont was quoted saying the folling in an interview: "I love the fact that The Mist is a pressure cooker that's character-driven and that's a down-and-dirty monster movie".
He then adds... "It's that wonderful Steve King taste in the mouth. I'm excited about getting back to my horror roots. I'm also excited about getting in there and shooting something down-and-dirty. I envision the monster barely glimpsed, just like in the story. These are things that you don't quite ever fully see. So I'm going to take a cue from everybody's godfather, Mr. Spielberg, and show the shark as little as possible".
