Empire Online spoke with actress Kate Beahan and confirmed that she has been added to the cast as Cage's love interest, although there was none in the original. On that note, Beahan explained how the films will be similar-themed, but ultimatelly be significantly different. Also, Leelee Sobieski and Ellen Burstyn have been added to the cast. Leelee plays a barmaid that Cage confides in, while Ellen plays the leader of a cult.

Variety confirms that Nic Cage is set to star in the film. He'll be playing the policeman that investigates the disappearance of a girl. Production is scheduled to begin July 15 in Vancouver Canada.

5/12/03
The director spoke with The The Sunday Herald recently and revealed some differences this remake will have compared to the original... "The original was a horror film about a policeman sent to a small island to investigate the disappearance of a girl who finds a pagan society. In my version [Nicolas] Cage winds up on an island that's a very matriarchal society, run by women who are the direct descendants of pilgrims...I can't reveal the plot too far. But Howie's [Cage's character] downfall comes about when he is torn between two very different women, neither of whom is what they seem. One is very outgoing and apparently upfront about her sexuality; the other is dark and intense. But looks can be deceptive, as he finds out."

N/A Date
The director was quoted saying... "Cage is attached to play [the cop]. He winds up on this island that's a very matriarchal society run by women who are direct descendants of pilgrims.
The women range in age from 10 to 50. I think Angelina [Jolie] and Winona [Ryder] would be great choices."
