Day 10 of 12 Days of Christmas Horror: Jack Frost (1997)

Every year we’re bombarded with the Holiday season. As soon as Halloween ends the stores are flooded with Christmas gear. Trees, toys, decorations...all things jolly pack shelves and even neighbor’s yards. Well I say they can take that jolly cheer and shove it right back down the bloody neck stump of a decapitated Santa carcass.

Join me this December for for some Holiday themed horror as we delve into 12 different horror movies. Some are new, some are old, some are nice, most are naughty, all will bring us blood soaked snow, killer santas, and demons that will punish the misbehaving masses. This is UHM’s 12 Days of Christmas Horror.

DAY 1: Krampus (2015)
This is a fun movie that delivers a few scares and some good practical effects. While it doesn’t match the greatness of Trick r’ Treat, Krampus is still a worthy entry in the holiday horror subgenre and I can see it becoming a Christmas staple for horror fans in the future.

DAY 2: A Christmas Horror Story (2015)
This is a flawed movie that has some positives, but they were not enough to completely save it. There’s certainly worse Christmas horror out there, though there’s also much better. I liked some of the segments and couldn't be bothered with others. It’s worth checking out but don’t get your Christmas hopes up.

DAY 3: Black Christmas (1974)
Black Christmas is a very early slasher that is suspenseful with classic filmmaking techniques and excellent characters. The tone is dark and remorseless though the 70s kitsch factor is very high. Anyone who considers themselves even a casual horror fan owes it to themselves to check this inspirational gem out.

DAY 4: Santa Claws (1996)
This movie is a steaming pile of crap and likely exists solely for the director to have women strip for him. The Santa aspect is a lame addon and just about every other aspect of this movie can best be described as “incompetent.” Still, Debbie Rochon does an ok job. Avoid at all costs.

DAY 5: Saint Nick (2010)
The murderous renegade bishop takes care of business as he tears through Amsterdam and delivers a solid holiday horror. I really liked this one, it should be a staple on December 5th for everyone.

DAY 6: Black Christmas (2006)
Sex tapes, drunken incest, liver diseases, cannibalism, and icicle through the eyeball; Black Christmas has it all. Though, it honestly feels a little over-indulgent. The plot and mystery are all sacrificed for more gratuitousness. It’s not bad but doesn’t have the charm or sincerity of the original.

DAY 7: Krampus: The Reckoning (2015)
This is a real crap movie. The filmmakers put in an honest effort, but budget, poor effects, and lackluster acting all drove this down. Also, this is the least “Christmassy” Christmas horror ever.

DAY 8: Happy Helladays (2011)
Happy Helladays is a low budget Christmas romp that wants you to look at horror more on the fun trashy side than the serious one. If you can look past the bad acting, and like to have a laugh along with your testicle cutting scenes then Happy Helladays is for you.

DAY 9: Krampus: The Christmas Devil (2013)
Krampus: The Christmas Devil is low budget trash. There’s lots of these terrible Krampus movies now and The Christmas Devil is one of the worst. Everything from the acting to costumes to camera work is done poorly. How this movie ever got a sequel I’ll never know.
