Leads set for THE THING prequel
THR reports that Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Final Destination 3, Black Christmas) and Joel Edgerton (Smokin' Aces, Acolytes) are the first cast added to the upcoming prequel to The Thing, which is scheduled to begin shooting on March 15th in Toronto, Canada.
Directed by Matthijs Van Heijningen and co-scripted by Eric Heisserer and Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), the film will follow Winstead as a Ph.D. candidate, who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.
The project was originally announced as a remake years ago, but was later revealed to be a sequel that would air as a two-part four-hour mini-series on the SyFy Channel. However, it's now considered to be a prequel and "re-imagining" of the series.
It's said that the pic will borrow heavily from the original short story 'Who Goes There?' by John W. Campbell Jr., which was the basis of the 1982 John Carpenter film and the 1951 Howard Hawks original, The Thing From Another World. More info on The Thing prequel can be found by clicking here.

I'm gona go back and watch FD for Winstead but this should be VERY cool
where the hell does Winstead fit in to all of this??? The Thing is one of my all time fav's! why the well mess with it with and put sex appeal in it? seriously, one woman with a bunch of men in the middle of nowhere...she's getting raped! so take her out, keep it close to the original, just a bunch of norwegian researchers, doing norwegian researching things. But fill it with more spider head things and mutilated dog corpses. trick is, we already know how it ends, but to find another ending for this will be tricky. if this syfy movie proves to be good, i will stand corrected, but as far as it goes, i'm disappointed in Winsteads role. just stupid!
I do like to see a prequel of THE THING. I like to see a sequel the this.
Cant wait for this sequel/prequel. The Thing movie rocks.
If you need any Norwegians for the Norwegian research team i`m your guy
This is the best movie news I've heard in awhile - I've been waiting for Mary Elizabeth Winstead to be in another horror movie. And on top of that, The Thing is one of relatively few movies where a prequel is really called for and makes sense. This is now among my most anticipated movies.
John carpenter films should be left alone.............................
