Ring 0: Birthday (2000)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

I was sadly disappointed with this film. When comparing it with the other two movies, it just doesn't match up. This one focuses more on the girl that is on the cursed video tape and how she really was in life and such. This film doesn't have as much creepiness as the other two movies. I think it's mainly kind of a tragic love story. One small scene somewhat reminded me of the climactic events in Carrie. I was hoping for a better ending, but was let down a bit. It's interesting to see how the girl was in real life though. She was always an outcast it seems. I guess that's what leads up to where she is now.

There's an interesting twist that is brought up towards the end of the movie, but it fails to do anything real major to help the film. It just draws more confusion. It would have been better off without it in my opinion. I did enjoy the movie though. It wasn't really boring and I was always curious about the girl. This movie pretty much answered all my questions. The acting was very well done, especially done by the lead actress who plays the girl on the tape. I didn't expect this movie to be so much of a love story. I was expecting some really creepy stuff showing the events before the actual video tape came about. Oh well. I wouldn't be surprised if a Ring 3 came about sometime in the near future. It started with the book, then the television series, then went to the big screen. Now Hollywood wants a piece of it by making an American version. This is a big series. I just hope they end it with a BANG!

If you ever want to see the American version, I suggest you check out these Japanese versions first. Can't wait to see how us Americans top the Japanese in the creepiness factor; probably not by much. Anyway, would have given this film a lower rating, but it's a good movie on its own, but not as good when compared to the other two films.

A somewhat of a let down in the RING series. Expected a lot more, but ended up with a tragic love story. If you're a fan of the series, then check this one out just so you can see that you've seen them all.
