Curtains (1983)

REVIEWER RATING:
4/10

I heard a lot of somewhat negative reviews for this film, but I figured I'd just rent it anyway. I watched the film not expecting much and that's exactly what I got. The film starts off with an actress going to a mental institution to do research for a roll and the director for the film ends up leaving her there.

She eventually escapes when she later learns that the director was going to do the film without her.She meets up with the director and the gang of new hopeful actresses and they start dying off one at a time, but who could be the killer? The obvious girl that escaped from the institution? Or someone totally different? Only the climax will reveal the truth.

I didn't really like this film, except for a cool scene or too. One scene I particularly enjoyed was an ice skating scene where there was some excellent slow motion of the killer skating towards a girl. Looked very cool and the creepy mask added to the effect. I found most of the film rather slow and boring. The killer apparently takes his/her time with the killings and I found myself wanting to just fast forward to the end. The acting was okay in parts, but unbelievable in others. The directing wasn't too bad though.

The ways the people died weren't very original, but then again, neither was the plot. Also wasn't surprised that there weren't any creepy or tense moments in the film. The supposed twist at the end wasn't much of a twist either. I would have given it a lower rating, but I thought it was decent. The killer was somewhat cool and that's always a plus. The rest of the movie pretty much sucked though.

Decent film with a somewhat cool killer. Could have been a lot better. Not really recommended unless you got nothing else to rent.
