Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

I heard a lot of positive stuff about this film and decided to finally check it out. It's been considered to be one of the best spider movies made by numerous horror fans and after viewing it I can see why they would think that. If you look past the age of the film and William Shatner being the main character you'll notice that it's actually not a bad movie. It was a little weird seeing Shatner playing a cowboy, but it didn't take long for his character to grow on me.

The effects for the flick were surprisingly decent considering the decade. I liked how the spiders would web their victims as a sign that they were conserving them for a later meal. Unfortunately, there's not much as far as gore or blood goes, but then a lot of American-made horror films during the time had little of either. The movie gets a little slow here and there, but starts to really pick up towards the end when the spiders take over the town, causing the townspeople to panic -- always a plus when a town goes crazy.

I would have given the movie a lower-rating, but I really enjoyed how towards the end of the movie the spiders trapped several people inside a small lodge, reminding me a bit of Night of the Living Dead, only replacing zombies with spiders. As far as spider films go, this isn't one to be missed.

This is a good and classic deadly-spider film, which in some aspects is better than more recent films with a similar theme. Check this one out.
