Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

REVIEWER RATING:
5/10

I heard a lot of hype about this movie before seeing it which made me want to see it. It was said to be a very disturbing and gory movie, so I just had to see it for myself. After watching it I have to say that it does somewhat live up to the hype, though, it wasn't as disturbing as I thought it'd be, but there are some cringe-worthy moments.

For those of you who thought Blair Witch was original it was nothing more than a rip-off of Cannibal Holocaust. Same goes for the Last Broadcast. Here's why -- the plot is basically about these four people who go to the jungle to film a documentary on cannibals. They go missing for a couple months so some people go searching for them. They encounter some local cannibalistic tribes of the jungle and end up retrieving the lost footage that the documentary team filmed.

The movie obviously has a lot of gore. I mean, how can you make a horror film about cannibals without gore right? That was understandable, but I thought it had a lot of unnecessary nudity. I figured the tribes would be pretty much naked, but still. The old guy that went searching for the missing people didn't have to get naked too. The movie is pretty decent. It has a lot of nice gore, good story, interesting nudity, but I feel that they really took it too far when they actually killed real life animals in the movie. I thought that was done in very poor taste and it's also a main reason for me giving it a 5-rating. Aside from the animal killings, the movie had some really strange music.

Anyway, I never really found myself turning away in any scenes, but I did cringe in parts. It's not something I normally see, so it was a new twist from my usual watch. Some of the scenes looked incredibly realistic and I wouldn't be surprised if some of what else was shown in the movie was real. I believe a short documentary that was shown in part of the movie was real.

A movie that somewhat lives up to its hype. Should be able to please many gore fans and those of you who want to see something that was once banned in America. Check this movie out if you want something to remember days after you watch it.
