BubbaHo-Tep (2002)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

I first heard about this film back when it just barely wrapped up filming and some pics for the film were released online. Back then it was a part of the UHM page, but eventually I took it down, because it seemed like it was never going to get distribution. It wasn't until recently that I added it back on the UHM page after learning that MGM was going to be distributing the flick on DVD. I was lucky enough to catch a copy it, but sadly after viewing it I was left disappointed. I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but I was thinking we'd at least get a little more action here.

The story revolves around an aging and very alive Elvis Presley played by Bruce Campbell. Apparently he switched places with an Elvis impersonator many years ago, and while the real Elvis was doing a show where he was pretending to be a fake Elvis, he broke his hip and fell off the stage. He then spent the rest of his life in an old folks home, with no friends but an old black fellow who claims to be a living JFK, who was "dyed" black in order to conceal his identity. The two attempt to get to the bottom of all the mysterious deaths that have occured within the home and discover that it's the work of an undead Egyptian mummy, who needs to suck the souls of people in order to continue "living". The two heroes try to put a stop to the soul-sucking madness after they find a way to possibly stop the pesky mummy in an old occult book.

I wanted to like the movie more than I did, but there was too much talking and Elvis laying on his ass than any kind of action. The only action we really get is a couple bug attacks around the beginning and maybe an attack from the mummy around the middle. The action really doesn't pick up until towards the end when Elvis and "JFK" try to put a stop to the mummy. The rest of the film just contains Elvis and his ally trying to figure out whats been going on. Despite that, I did enjoy some of the funny lines that the script offered. I guess that and the Elvis character were the only things that kept me interested.

A decent flick, but not enough goes on through most of it, which led me to give it a 6-rating. Despite that, it's worth a look if you're a Bruce fan or if you wanna check a cheesy horror flick with some funny dialogue.
