Chillerama is definitely not a film for everyone, as it's essentially an homage to the late cheesy drive-in movies of the 50's and 60's. I've personally never had the chance to go to a drive-in theater, so the whole experience is a bit lost with me. A collaboration of four different directors, the pic attempts to deliver absurd, schlock and grindhouse-esque features that you normally wouldn't see in cinema now-a-days. It works in certain aspects, but falls flat in others, and unfortunately due to a couple underwhelming segments that make up half the flick, it ends up a somewhat disappointing effort.

"Zom-B-Movie" Joe Lynch

The film starts off with this wraparound segment from Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2: Dead End) about a man who unearths his ex-wife's rotting corpse for a little good ol' fashioned necro-sex. What might've seem like a good idea at the time leaves him with a severely wounded penis, but that doesn't stop him from still going in to work at the local drive-in theater for their last showing before the place is closed down. This proves fatal to movie-goers as the man's infected penis finds its way into the popcorn butter and turns everyone into sex-crazed neon-colored oozing zombie freaks!

Since this is a wraparound segment we're shown bits and pieces of the story as the film progresses, with the three remaining shorts presented as movies within the drive-in theater's farewell screening. So the outcome of this isn't actually revealed until towards the end, after the third story wraps. Good move since it provided a nice break from each story and is actually my favorite of the four, thanks to it raunchy and grotesque humor, plus I loved the look of the neon-blue ooze that would seep out of the zombies.

"Wadzilla" by Adam Rifkin

Wadzilla is an homage to the classic cheesy giant monster movies from the 50's and is probably the most ridiculous (and fun) story in the batch. The segment revolves around a man who has a little problem with his sperm count. Apparently he has a strange medical condition where he only produces one single sperm cell when he ejaculates. His doctor advises him to take an experimental new drug that will hopefully increase his count. However, the man soon discovers that instead of increasing his sperm count, it causes the one sperm cell to increase in size, and before he knows it, the entire city is threatened by an enormous squirming sperm cell!

The ludicrous plot, intentionally bad acting, and horribly cheesy effects make this a riot to watch. It can't get any more ridiculously absurd than seeing a giant condom being lowered onto the Statue of Liberty before a massive sperm slithers its way into her imaginary thong panties. The most fun and cheesy of all the segments, this was my second fav. of the four.

"I Was a Teenage Werebear" by Tim Sullivan

This segment is Tim Sullivan's spoof of the silly musical beach films from the 60's, but with a homosexual twist. Werebear features gay adult film star Sean Paul Lockhart as "Ricky" the new guy who's constantly fighting his homosexual urges, especially while in a relationship with a female. That all changes when his "girlfriend" gets crushed by a car and becomes brain damaged. Enter "Talon" the leather bound bad boy who urges Ricky to embrace what he is and what he will become (after getting his ass bite during a wrestling match). The ladder referring to a "Werebear" which according to the movie is a burly, hairy-chested assless chaps-wearing dog-looking creature.

This is definitely the worst of the four segments, not just because I'm not a fan of musicals (which this is), but also because it just wasn't funny at all to me. The make-up effects are atrocious and the story and characters just completely bored me. I'm glad this wasn't an actual feature film, because I don't think I could've sat through any further of that nonsense.

"The Diary of Anne Frankenstein" by Adam Green

From Hatchet director Adam Green comes Diary of Ann Frankenstein, a tale that starts off with Hitler and his goons attacking Ann Frankenstein and her family, in hopes of getting his hands on her grandfather's (Victor Frankenstein) diary. Using the secrets hidden within the text, Hitler creates some Jewish Frankenstein's Monster that expectedly becomes hostile towards the Fuehrer.

This final story is featured in black and white and presented with English subs, as the cast primarily speaks German, with the exception of a few -- namely Joel Moore as Hitler, who hilariously spews a lot of gibberish that sounds a little like German. I really wanted to like this installment, but I just found it to be rather boring. That isn't to say that it's bad, in fact, I found a lot of the gags quite funny. I just thought the pacing was a bit slow and there were quite a few jokes that didn't really work for me. In the end it's a decent addition to the anthology, but sadly not as strong as it should've been.

Chillerama is an interesting and somewhat successful attempt at bringing back the old school look and feel of the cheesy drive-in movie. But the anthology itself is regrettably made up of one bad story and one mediocre one, resulting in a fairly disappointing watch. Had the last two tales been as fun and entertaining as the first two then I would've liked it more, but as it stands I just couldn't get into it as much as I wanted. This might be worth a look with a group of friends, but I'd advise against watching it solo, or sober for that matter.
