Chopping Mall (1986)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

Ah yes, Chopping Mall. I remember seeing this flick when I was a kid and really enjoying it. It was good to go back to it thanks to its recent DVD release and this isn’t a barebones disc either -- there are actually extra features unlike a lot of other 80's horror releases on DVD.

There's a nice short documentary that talks about the making of the film. This movie obviously isn't a masterpiece, but it sure is entertaining 80's horror cheese. I think the robots in this movie are much like how Johnny Five from Short Circuit would have been if he weren't such a wussy robot.

The story is simply about a group of young friends who all decide to stay overnight at their local mall and have a party (naturally). They must have bad timing, because not only is the new security robots, but killer robots at that, thanks to the ominous lightning bolt that struck the building and somehow got into the bots systems turning into killing machines!!! Ahhh!!!

The movie has its fair share of plot-holes and silly sequences that don't make a whole lot of sense, but if you try not to over analyze everything and just watch it as it is you might find yourself enjoying it. I think a big reason why I enjoyed it as much as I did was because I liked it as a kid and normally stuff you dig as a kid you learn to dig when you're older, or at least in my case.

There's a decent amount of blood and gore, but nothing special. In the end it's not a bad flick. In a decade where topless chicks, booze and sex parties, and a masked killer reigned supreme, a flick with killer robots really stands out. Sadly it still remained as an underrated flick, but now thanks to the modern DVD age, anyone can go out and buy it for a nice reasonable price. Yay!

If you're looking for a cheesy 80's horror flick with killer robots then this be your movie. Plot-holes and silly action sequences, but hey, look at the decade. Worth a check for something fun and brainless.
