Creep (2004)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

I've heard good things about this UK flick from horror fans who've managed to catch it already, so I knew going into it that I was going to be in for a treat. The movie really grabs hold of you from the start, when after leaving a party star Franka Potente makes way to the local subway station, where she dozes off while waiting for the train, only to wake up to an empty station, despite people being there when she arrived. She attempts to find another living soul with an avail. That is until a weirdo from the party shows up in the station and tries to have his way with her. Before he can do any harm his body is sucked away by something from outside the train cart. That's when the paranoia sets in and the woman is left running around the station in hopes of finding another living soul.

When I was watching this movie the first thing that came to mind to best describe this was Wrong Turn in the Subway, because the woman (an outsider) comes in contact with a local (a weird subway dweller) that apparently has a sick fetish for humans. We don't get to see what it is exactly that's terrorizing the woman until more than half way into it, which is obviously a good thing. I also liked the fact that the back-story on the villain wasn't entirely explained, because I'm tired of seeing horror flicks that have at least one character that somehow knows everything and explains it to the rest of the people. No, in this movie we're giving hints as to the origin of the villain; very good move on the director's part. Speaking of director Christopher Smith, this is his feature film debut, and I have to say that so far he's headed in the right direction, especially if he stays within the genre.

The flick has a good amount of gore during certain death scenes, but there were a couple scenes that seemed like they might have been briefly cut, so I don't know if I saw an edited or uncut version of the film. The only problem I had with the movie would have to be the story, which was too simplistic in my opinion. Otherwise I have no complaints.

A good watch that should please horror fans as it did me. Don't expect a lot of story, but do expect some cool gory deaths. Recommended.
