Death Spa (1988)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

I saw the uncut DVD of this film under its second title, Witch Bitch, thanks to German distributor Dragon Film Entertainment . I wasn't sure what I was getting into before I watched it, because I read a lot of negative reviews, but I actually found the movie entertaining. I don't know if the fact that I saw this movie uncut made it good, but despite the silly plot it's actually somewhat of an underrated movie. The story is about a health spa, where people get together to work out and hit the sauna. It turns out that the place is haunted by a angry jealous spirit of an ex-wife of one of the owner's of the spa. I know the whole idea about a spa being haunted is a stupid, but it sure beats the clichéd haunted house theme, that's for sure.

I think what I liked most about the movie were the sweet death scenes, which were some of the most original death scenes I've seen in a horror movie, and considering it was uncut I was sure not to miss any of the gore. Some of the more memorable scenes would have to be where a girl gets totally ripped to shreds when glass breaks in front of her. Another is where a guy gets his ribs crushed when he uses one of the weight equipment; pretty sweet stuff. It was also cool to see Ken Foree in the movie. You might remember him as the black fellow from Dawn of the Dead. Very cool guy. We also see a small cameo from the girl that played Hilary from the Fresh Prince of Bell Air. I was hoping she'd have a nude scene, but sadly she didn’t.

The acting is average stuff you see coming from the 80s and so is the directing. The only stuff I really didn't like about the movie were the plot-holes. Other than that I enjoyed it and that's why I decided to give it a 6-rating. If you see this movie, try to catch the uncut version. I don't know how much they cut from the regular version, but it must be a lot. There are some really cool gory scenes.

Some might disagree, but to me it's a very underrated 80's horror film. It had some really sweet death scenes and gore. Only bad thing about the movie are the plot-holes. Check this film and try to get the uncut version.
