Demon Knight (1995)

REVIEWER RATING:
8/10

I saw this film when it came out in theaters and I think I actually like it more now than I did then. Sure the flick has some plot-holes here and there, but it's still an overall excellent demonic ride, and possibly one of the best demon-related horror movies ever made. At least in my opinion.

The movie starts off with a man named Brayker (William Sadler) just coming out of a car wreck in the middle of the road in what seems to be a lowly-populated town out in the desert area. After failing to steal a truck, he hides in an old shoddy motel, which is where the rest of the movie takes place. While getting to know the motel locals, a "demon knight" (Billy Zane) is hot on Brayker's trail. Once the knight discovers where he's located, hell ensues and the tenants and Brayker are forced to stay within the motel walls, because they know once they step foot outside they'll be devoured by the evil demon beasties from hell!!

I really love this movie because of its use of dark and neon colors and the demons were pretty badass looking (especially with the neon-green eyes). Although one question does arise about the demons: why do they have piercings?... I guess that question will remain an enigma. Either way, the demons here are some of the best (equal to Lamberto Bava's Demons and the cult flick Night of the Demons) looking in a horror movie, and believe me, I've seen a lot of demon films in my time. The movie also doesn't shy on the gore either. Nope, this flick is loaded with it -- decapitations, arrow-through-head, arm torn off -- good stuff!

The movie is just a fun ride from the start to the finish, with a lot of tits, gore, and the occasional comedy thrown in. What more could you ask for? Even the Crypt keeper's opening and ending was a fun watch. I guess maybe I just like the flick so much cuz I'm a big Tales fan. Oh well. I gave this movie a well deserved 8-rating for being such a cool demon flick.

This movie came out in the mid-90's when Tales From the Crypt was still pretty big and the cash-in success of a movie was imminent. The movie was then followed by the failed Bordello of Blood. There was much talk of another Tales flick, but it never happened; at least not officially. For one reason or another, a movie by the name of Ritual was listed as the next installment, although our beloved Crypt keeper was nowhere to be found, so who knows if it really was another addition. Why the HBO series ended is beyond me, but I always loved it and hope that one day the US will be lucky enough to get a DVD box set release of all the episodes.

One of the best demon horror movies ever made (in my opinion). Lots of gore and sweet-lookin' demons. Definitely worth a check.
